problems with sd card (internal memory)

2020-04-01, 5:28 AM

Hi,

I know it is not such a good idea to use an SD card as internal memory. But unfortunately it has now happened.

I use a Motorola G5s with Android 8.1, 64 GByte SD card as internal memory. Now I would like to switch to a new Android and backup everything via the Google cloud before. Both Whatsapp backups and ThreemaBackups abort, probably because there is too little memory. The internal shared memory is given as 13.04 used by 32 GB and the SD as 63.06 used by 64 GB. I have removed Apps & Videos, only the internal shared memory becomes free. However, the backup problem remains.

What can I do? How can I make Whats App etc. find enough memory again?

Kind regards

Alex

There are apps on the Playstore that can independently back up WhatsApp data and possibly other ones for the other stuff you need to backup.

Also look for a Folder called LOST.DIR. This can grow to a big size and contains useless,"Data Dumps" from apps and failed installs. If found delete all contents.

You should be able to copy data to another device like a PC/Laptop but I have the official Motorola USB drivers installed,

https://support.motorola.com/us/en/drivers

and I've found this free File manager works well with Internal Storage SD cards,

HTH :)

Hi,

It seems that every delete causes the internal memory to become empty (more than 10 gigabytes), but that the external memory remains so full (only a few megabytes) free. Is it possible that apps (Whatsapp, Threema) want to move to external memory and don't notice that the internal memory is free?

Whenever I've tested Adoptive Memory/Internal SD card it's a two part operation. Once the Card was formatted as Internal you also have go into the SD card settings on the phone and choose,"Migrate".

Do NOT reformat the card at the moment as that will wipe the data.

Am I losing data through migrate (without reformat)?

I tried it few seconds ago. Migration was aborted with error "not enough memory"; all data still there, only no improvement

Hi Sweeny!

Thanks for posting! You can back your WhatsApp data in Google cloud-- WhatsApp > Settings > Chat > Back Up. For the Threena application, looks like there is no option for back up in Google cloud, you can delete the unwanted or least used applications for now and try making some Storage and try to back up. Let me know how it goes.

Suman

Hi,

you can delete the unwanted or least used applications for now and try making some Storage and try to back up

I've already done that; all the less important apps are gone, videos deleted. There is also enough space on the internal memory (several gigabytes), but the external card is full. And the problems that I can't save anything still exist.

Hi,

Since you're looking to switch to a new phone, what I would recommend is to backup everything from your SD Card to a computer. Then format the SD Card as portable again. this way you have storage available as well as card will be ready to be used in your new phone. Let us know how it goes.

Suman
