Adoptable storage

2018-05-26, 15:04 PM

On my G4 plus , I could format my SD card as normal storage or adoptable storage. In my new 6G plus I use te same 64Gb card but I cannot format it as adoptable storage anymore. Is this option gone in Android 8.0

Hi Mr_Tie,

Thanks for reaching out to us. We are ready to clarify your inquiries here. For the Moto G6 Plus variant, I'm afraid formatting an SD card as internal adoptable storage is NOT an option. It is only available on the Moto G6 and the Moto G6 Play variants.

Moved to existing thread.

I know adopted storage caused problems for many. Likely Moto got tired of all the support issues (corrupt cards) - hopefully Google will come up with a better solution in the future.

It may be possible to enable it using adb (root not needed)

But, if the G6+ is using file based encryption instead of device based encryption (to enable DirectBoot) you can't use AdoptedStorage.

Your "solution" to this issue is very unsatisfactory. I bought a g6plus specifically because of the advertised feature of expanding the storage. I use a lot of downloaded maps and music, and the option to have it all sorted internally was my main reason for choosing this model. I did not know I would not be able to do this until after purchasing the phone and an expensive 128gb SD card. Several hundred pounds and alot of wasted time trying, I find this post only to discover I cannot do this. I feel cheated, as this is how this device was marketed. As a loyal Motorola buyer and user for many years, you have succeeded in losing me now. Not happy!

You can expand storage, just like every Android device with an SD card going back nearly 10 years.

Adoptable Storage is not required for that. Adpoptable stoarage didn't even exist until Android 6.0, but SD cards were used long before that.

I didn't see anything in the marketing material that claimed adoptable storage (a specific Android feature). Do you have a link showing otherwise?

You can put photos, videos, mucic, and lots of other things on the added SD card.

Most mapping apps willl let you store the map data on the SD card too.

So am I missing something here? In your reply to the original post about using the SD card for internal storage you said that Moto 6 plus could not use the SD card for internal storage: "I'm afraid that formatting an SD card is not an option as internal adoptable storage"  There is no menu option for this either. I can format the SD card as portable storage, but that won't necessarily let all apps work.

In Motorola's description and full specs it does say expandable storage up to 256gb. So as  I am not an expert, just a customer, I took this to mean I could expand the internal storage.

Have I missed the point and not understood why of this, or are we talking at cross purposes?

First you may be confising me and someone else. The bit you quoted me as saying was not from me, it was from Agent_JM.

Epandable does not mean adoptable storage. I've had lots of phones that were marketed as "expandable storage" going back long before adoptable storage existed.

In adoptable storage the card is encrypted and can only be used by the phone you set it up in. You can't take it out and read it on a computer or in another phone. That's why I've never used it, even when it's has been an option.

Now, that said, I can't find anything definitive from Motorola about adoptable storage or not., I did see some online reviews that mentioned adoptable storage but it wasn't clear if they actually tested it.

I did make a post about the use of encryption on the phone and the 2 different versions  (file based or disk based).  This http://motorola-global-en-roe.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/126933 and other info
makes me think they are using file based (and DirectBoot) and it's tied to the use fo a password/PIN/pattern on the lock screen.
