Copy data to new phone, G6 to G6

2020-06-30, 2:06 AM

I bought a new G6 to replace my old one with a cracked screen. During the usual copy data from an old phone, it gives an error. "Device disconnected" on the old phone and "something went wrong" on the new phone. There are no other options and nothing more to troubleshoot. Are there any logs I can access to see what's happening?

Could this be from the fact that the new phone is still Android 8 while the old phone has been updated to Android 9?

Is there a way to update the new phone and then access the copy data interface again? I can't figure out to get back to that without a factory reset, which puts the phone back to Android 8.

Sorry to hear you had issues with the data transfer. Unfourtantely the only way to get back to the back/restore process is by performing a Factory Reset. However, it will not remove any OS update that were installed. So, if your device upgraded to Android 9 it will still be on Android 9 after the Factory Reset. I hope that helps.

That does help, or at least it's promising. I will try the factory reset again once the phone has all the updates installed. There are a lot! I guess that the price you pay for getting an older model.

Yes. The old phone is accessible and useable. The two phones see each other over WiFi/Bluetooth, they connect showing the pattern of shapes, they both say they are beginning to copy data, and then the error occurs.

Do you have access to a PC or computer?

If so install these drivers,

https://support.motorola.com/us/en/drivers

and then using a USB data cable transfer what you need.

If you want to copy other stuff install this app on both devices,

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.idea.backup.smscontacts&hl=en_GB

Backup on the Damaged phone and then copy the app's backup folder to the new phone and load in the stuff from there :)

MotorolaTom, the update to Android 9 followed by a reset allowed the copy of data and accounts to proceed.

Porphyrius, your suggestions were good. I will use those to transfer data in the future.

Thank you both for your help.
