Limited Wi-Fi WPA2-PSK Password Length?

2019-01-12, 19:16 PM

Trying to connect new Moto G6 (Android 8) to home LAN.  Wi-Fi password for many years has been a random sequence of 64 Hex characters generated by Microsoft.  The G6, however, appears to accept no more than 63 characters (which would be the correct limit only if they were general ASCII characters).  I have 18 other devices (some for occasional visitors) all successfully set to this password, so it's not practical to change it.  What gives with the Moto G6 (or maybe it's Android in general)? -- JCW2

Re: Limited Wi-Fi WPA2-PSK Password Length?

UPDATE:  So far I have determined (through Motorola 2nd level tech support) that the G6 cannot accept a WPA2-PSK password longer than 63 characters (of any type), so it is not possible to connect it to my 256-byte-password LAN.  They weren't clear on whether this applies to all (recent?) Motorola phones.

What I still want to know is this:  Is this a characteristic of the Android 8 OS in general, or is Motorola presumed to be using a degraded implementation? -- JClarkW
