Replacement cables for G6

2019-02-22, 14:53 PM

Has anyone had any luck with 3rd party USB-C to USB-A cables? I tried a set from Anker, and they worked for charging, but not data transfer. Looking for something longer and more durable than the stock Motorola cable.

Strange that the cables didn't work for data.Did they state they were for data?

Also do you have the correct USB drivers installed on the device you are transferring to?

Remember some Android versions like on Motos don't enable USB file transfers by default(PITA IMHO) but you have drag your notification bar down as per below,

You can get cheap USB and UBS C data cables from Walmart as well :)

You CAN label it a PITA if you like, but it's all about security. It's about not allowing someone to walk over to an unlocked phone in MTP/PTP mode and cherry-picking which files they want to steal and which one's they don't, if not all of them.

You may not have sensitive data on your phone, but a lot of people do...

I tried both the file and photo settings, with the same result - Windows Explorer just freezes. The original Moto cable works just fine. Anker sent a 2nd set of cables, but they didn't work for data, either. It's kinda puzzling, because I thought that the wiring scheme in the USB-C end was pretty standard.

Have you tried installing the official Window's Motorola USB drivers?

I have not. Thanks for the tip. Didn't know that there was one of those! However, I discovered that the Anker cable worked for data transfer when plugged into my USB 2.0 slot, rather than the USB 3.0 slot. Surprising, but maybe the Motorola USB driver will remedy that. Thanks again.

There's a lot of variables when it comes to USB connections.I too have had some Phones only connect to windows devices via USB 2.00 slots.I'm not too bothered though so long as I can transfer files.USB 3.00 can be faster but if you don't watch the transfers, they go faster ;-)

Also remember that Android phones are a Linux based operating system so I'm just happy they work with Windows at all :)

I also have a problem which I hope is cable related and not the phone.  In order to transfer files I must continually apply an upward pressure on the cable where it attaches to the phone in order to maintain  the connection.  Any thoughts - phone or cable?

Inspect the USB slot as close as you can for even the tiniest bit of debris or corrosion in any of the pinholes which can cause connection problems.I use a bit of electrical,"Contact Cleaner" on the male plugs (Not the USB sockets for safety reasons) of my USB cables from time-to-time.

HTH :)
