Re: I haven't gotten a single security update on my G6

2018-08-29, 20:53 PM

one of the major problems of lenovo's retracting the moto g6 60-90 day security patch commitment months after the phone has already shipped is the moto g6 reviews are now incorrect.  all the professional and individual reviews that explicitly list the 60-90 day security patch commitment as a "strength" now have to be corrected to state lenovo has changed their mind and will only provide security patches on an "as needed" basis.  if you are a moto g6 retus customer, "as needed" means it has been 181 days since the march 1, 2018 out-of-the-box security patch with no future security patch ETA available from lenovo.  trying to correct the internet after the fact is near impossible to do.  what we will end up with is conflicting reviews, unnecessary confusion, and ultimately disappointment when a future customer purchases a moto g6 expecting 60-90 day security patches only to find out it does not.  as lenovo's public moto g6 security patch commitment was widely advertised, lenovo is obligated to buy-back the phones from customers who were misled by lenovo's original security patch commitment.  it's like a car manufacturer promising free servicing of the vehicle for the first two years at the time of purchase.  however when the customer brings the car in for service during those first two years, the car manufacturer says "we changed our mind, we don't want to do that anymore."  it is bait-and-switch false promises to help sell the car....or in lenovo's case bait-and-switch false promises to help sell the moto g6 phone.

Re: I haven't gotten a single security update on my G6

I'm glad I'm not the only one. Also very frustrated.

Also, the security patch is clearly needed. My Moto G6 bought last month restarts itself multiple times per day, and crashes all the time. People on other retail channels have said that a security patch fixes it, but I'm in the same boat as you guys (RETUS channel, so an extremely old security update).

Does anybody else have this constant restarting problem?

My moto g6 is on the RETEU channel and I've never got an OTA update so it's not just your problem. That's why I decided to manually update the system myself because I see that there is no other solution. Currently, I have a security patch from July 1, 2018. I was installing the update the second time after the purchase. I did not have other problems with the phone as you describe. I've been using it since April 2018. I'm not counting on getting an update by OTA anymore. I know that I am on my own. I know from others that a lot depends on where you bought the phone. It turns out that not every software distribution was the same. Even identical phones in the same country bought in different networks, some get an update and the other does not.

hi Swaraj,

you wrote: "Please update your profile with the IMEI number of your phone, let me take a look at that."

let me reword the problem description in a different way.  my moto g6 was purchased in the united states from a retail store (like Best Buy, Walmart, etc).  my moto g6 is on the RETUS channel (RETUS = retail united states).  the out-of-the-box security patch is march 1, 2018.  i have never received any security patch updates.  today's date is august 30, 2018 and my security patch level is still at the out-of-the-box march 1, 2018 security patch level.

has lenovo released a moto g6 RETUS security patch after march 1, 2018?  if yes,

1) What was the exact security patch level released?  for example: "June 1, 2018", "July 1, 2018", "August 1, 2018"

2) What was the exact date the security patch was released to the public?

if lenovo has never released a moto g6 RETUS security patch after march 1, 2018, then it is not an issue with individual phones, and investigating individual IMEIs will not help.

how did you do this?  instructions available?  can this be done without rooting the phone?

my moto g6 has never restarted unexpectedly.

you might have a rogue/incompatible app causing this.  after you remove your personal apps does the constant restarting problem occur?

I understand your concern but request you to provide us the IMEI so we can take a look and confirm the same.

lenovo has declined to answer this question.  lenovo's decision to retract their 60-90 day security patch commitment for the moto g6 has nothing to do with my individual phone.  lenovo's request for my individual phone's IMEI is declined.

Yes, you can install the official firmware without root and without unlocking the bootloader. It takes a few minutes. However, I can not give you instructions here due to the rules of the forum.
