Private number as in withheld? If so, the standard Google Phone app may have dealt with it as a spam number and took it straight to voicemail?
Fluctuations in your network coverage could also cause calls to go straight to voicemail.

Check Phone app settings and turn off spam filtering.
Carefully monitor your network reception and change carrier if reception is flaky.
An internet search will take you to independent network coverage maps.
