Lenovo says they are working on a solution.

Are they saying that somewhere around here? The only Lenovo reps I see here are collecting data like your EMEI for this problem :(

Just roll back updates one at a time until the problem is gone.

Easier said than done. On my phone, the list doesn't clear for something like 24 hours.

On Android we are not stuck with default dialers.

Try this one,

I checked it out, thanks.  It is good that we can choose.

Unfortunately, that particular one doesn't distinguish favorites by anything other than text (I have very few photos for my contacts), and so they are hard to distinguish.  I got used to color = person in the default Lenovo/Moto app.

So while we have choice, switching has costs (even if the app is free).

Re: Speed dial list auto clearing

Found the cause and the fix!

The problem lies in the package Google Play Services. if you want to fix this auto clearing, remove the contacts permission from Google Play services app but be aware that this will BREAK CONTACTS SYNCYING with your google account and you will get notifications about this intermittently and you will not be able to sync contacts without giving contacts permission to Google Play Services. (however, you can give contacts permission, sync contacts, then again deny contacts permission, this works fine.)Other than this everything will work just fine and you won't notice anything.(this app cannot be uninstalled or disabled as it is a system app and updates automatically as many other apps depend on it for proper working.)

Motorola or lenovo have nothing to do with this problem. The problem is due to some dumb guy at google who thought that people like to clear their frequent contacts and so he decided to do this on their behalf. There is a service in this package named "contactinteractions.service" which runs by itself from time to time and clears the frequently contacted list. this was not present in older versions of this app (I checked ver 10) but is present in the latest versions (ver 17 in my case) so we should be complaining to google. moreover this functionality is bound to be absent from android Q onwards.

This helped me too

Thank you YogeshRoy for taking the time to find the reason.

If anyone reports this to Android (Google), please post a link here, so we can all add our comments/complaints, so they know it is widespread.  I cannot find a location to publish the issue.

Yes, thanks very much for this!  Just turned it off; hopefully it'll start working again.

Agreed that it would be very, very good to inform Google of the error of their ways -- I'll try and do a little checking on where Android bugs get posted.

Hi, I am marking my fix as solution in case anyone else needs help.

I have also looked around for filing a bug report with google, but as this is not a bug, but a "feature" built in the app, contacting the app developers regarding the inconvenience being faced by us due to this "feature" seems to be the appropriate action. The app developers can be contacted via email at "apps-help@google.com" with a subject line "Google Play Services".

Re: Speed dial list auto clearing

Well... my speed dial started working again a couple of days ago.

First, I used YogeshRoy's "fix", disabling access to the Contacts app by Google Play Services.  While this seemed to work, getting the annoying "clonk" every few hours and a popup wasn't tolerable for me.

So I re-enabled it after a day.

Now, several days later, my Speed Dial entries are not being cleared.  I have an almost-full screen of them after several calls to different people, and some are several days old now.

So I don't know what gives.  Maybe disabling / re-enabling access fixed it.  But my stock dialer app now has Speed Dial entries like it used to:  Accumulated from the most recent calls.

I wish luck to all!
