Re: low speaker volume on phone calls

2019-05-11, 18:56 PM

Given my tech bacground Customer Support upgraded the case then I began working with a level 3 technician, K.   Although the replacement phone was likely factory reset then tested, K had me go into safemode then factory reset the phone and then move through re-initializaions before loading any apps.  Upon receiving K's next phone call, the same low volume behavior occurred.  Additionally we discovered that the audio volume on his phone's receiving end was also low and then became normal after performing the sequence in my first post.  Also discovered that his volume was actally muted after I selected Speaker...Mute.  Thus while my volume became normal, K could not hear anything until I touched Mute a second time.

What that tells me circuit-wise is the volume control is likely occurring before the split, not after it as I speculated in my first post and that affects the output of the motorola phone app audio level at both ends of a call.  That is a very important clue for debug.  Apparently the Speaker and Mute controls affect the call volume before it reaches a split between the external speaker and the earphone jack path.  But if one has plugged in an earphone the control that apparently lowers the volume in the motorola phone app, switches volume back to a normal level. Pull the earphone back out and it switches back to low volume on the external speaker like a toggle function.  Design-wise, it may be this has something to do with keeping the volume low enough that some lawyer cannot sue saying it is damaging people's ears but that in subsequent revisions engineering lost track of what is involved.

The US based customer support group honestly sounded like they had not been receiving many cases with the issue and were very interested in working with me to get to the bottom of it.  Thus I am going to ask herein for some input.  Since both my phones had this same issue, I expect some others do too.  The above customer support group would very much like to know if others posting here have this exact same issue that if so will receive much more attention from their engineering versus someone's unique issue. Otherwise it might be dismissed as simply some competitor phone sales people spewing negatives towards another brands products.  As noted in my first post, one can independently use the Voicemail function to readily cause the issue.

So time to put up or shut up.

I too am facing the same issues with my g6 plus. Judging by the responses I have seen to various posts made on this forum over a considerable amount of time, I am highly sceptical as to whether any of the issues outlined have or will ever be resolved.

I see replies but never any fixes/software updates to remedy the issues. Lenovo barely even release the security patches let alone fixes that are so desperately needed.

I highly doubt any of the problems will ever find a full resolution as the clear response seems to just be to fob you off with a "our team is looking into it". To which no update or fix or ever issues.

I have lost all faith in the Lenovo brand so will definitely be shopping elsewhere for a better phone with a more reliable customer service. I think that only the threat of a lawsuit would spring Lenovo into action to finally bring a fix to their flailing devices. Disappointing to say the least.

Hi All,

We thank you for all your inputs, please update your profile with the IMEI number of your phone/Device Model? Is it okay if we look into your apps to determine what is causing the issue? This will help us investigate further. Make sure that your Motorola Privacy is enabled. Settings > Systems > Motorola Privacy > Enable.

If you need a reference in updating your profile, please click this link. https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Forum-Feedback/Complete-your-forums-profile/td-p/3339943

What we really need here as I noted above  is your actual description of how your phone call volumes are actually failing.  Like what are you doing?  If you need to, use the Voicemail process I related as it is simple and doesn't actually require having someone call.  Otherwise a post may read as potentially just someone trying to post negatives on a competitive phone model.  If one reads the full thread, it is obvious there seems to be multiple issues and as a person that debugs, that raises flags of credibility because it is unlikely all the failure modes are actually occurring and more likely some of it is BS.  The fact days after I posted no one has verified what I wrote above says either few are looking at this thread or there is not a widespread issue.

Came here because I'm having the same problem with a new G6.  This thread was first result when googling moto g6 low call volume.  I read the entire thread and the problem is clear.  It is simply this:  It is difficult to hear even at maximum volume when using the standard phone app.  Other apps like Hangouts Dialer have perfectly loud volume.  So, clearly it's not a hardware problem or lack of capability, and the phone "can" work properly.  The standard phone app and the Hangouts Dialer are two different pieces of software.  There is no other explanation needed.

d7v7d7, you really didn't read the thread or are trolling.  Nobody here is faking anything.  Given that smost people would never post, or would not know where to go to find this thread, we can assume it is a widespread issue.

Hi All,

Thank you for your feedback, please be advised that we have already reported this with our team. We would need your devices IMEI's to investigate this further.

Dear Agent_Swaraj,

Motorola support staff need to take a bunch of phones upgraded to Pie and play around with them to find all the problems. You will then be able to file your own bug reports instead of relying on your customers to do the beta testing

My speaker volume is also extremely low.  I always have to use the conference speaker to hear anything.  Out of curiosity how is your wifi?  Does your amazon app / netflix app work when you turn wifi on?  how about bluetooth syncing when wifi is turned on?  Shame on Moto/Lenovo.
