reusing a micro SD card

2020-02-14, 5:12 AM

I want to use the micro sd card from my g6 motorola in another device. But i can not format the sd card to the size it is (64G). When I format the card (with my pc) it keeps saying that the size is only 1MB. How can i reformat the card to be able to use it on other devices?

Hi Peter157,

Thanks for posting! Are you able to format the SD card through the phone? If you haven't tried it yet, can you try and let me know?

yes, i've tried that to. But the "motorola format" stays on and when you read it with a usb card reader in the pc, it says: 1Mb (and not 64GB) Also the files who are on are not visible.

SD cards can fail and become unusable but try using Minitool Partition Wizard(use a search engine for it) and delete the Partition on the SD card and then re-create it.

Warning! This software is powerful and you need to make sure you are working on the SD card as this software can wipe your PC system drive if used incorrectly.

seems like after everything i tried. (minitool, reformatting, putting in other cellphone, SD card formatter, ...) that ones you have put the card in the motorola G6 play. You can't "deformat" the card and it stays in a way encrypted with the motorola script.

Buying a new card is the only option it seems. (But in the motorola it reads 64G)

There are some fake and cheap SD cards around that are rubbish. I've got a Sandisk 32GB SD card that I've used as Internal and External storage and even as,"Split" Internal/External storage and it's still fine and can be re-partitioned but I only buy online from Amazon and read the reviews of the seller just in case.

I don't buy off eBay any more and I've been burnt off there. I also have an old Kingston 16 GB going strong after about four years which is good for an SD card as they don't last forever and I never trust any SD card for keeping important data on so back up to the Cloud and other devices.

after further reading, trying, reformatting etc etc seems like the problem is the card reader!

usb 2.0 doesn't support big sd cards (32gb 64gb). Now in search for a good card reader...

Good point. Some hardware like SD cards is/are moving faster than others and therefore some of the additional hardware like SD adapters have not caught up and neither have the phones. I doubt phone makers ever thought there would 256GB SD cards or bigger.

For me putting too large an SD card in a phone is asking for trouble. It's only ever been a temporary storage solution @ best IMHO. This is why I believe in off-phone backups to Cloud and other devices.

I have several SD adapters but my favourite one I bought recently is a combined OTG/SD adapter. It has a Micro USB at one end to go into the phone then two slots, one for a Nano SD and one for the Full size adapters that take a Nano SD and a standard USB at the other end. This way I can transfer files direct from the phone to an External SD card using OTG(On-The-Go) and then plug into my Laptop if required. Great for if you do a lot of photography and want to carry more storage space. Of course I also use a standard USB to Micro USBto transfer files to my PC/Laptop.

Also the default file system on mobile phones used on SD cards is Fat32 which has a 4GB file size limit. You might like to try exFat but it's easier to format to this on a PC.

Hi Peter157,

Yes, it sounds like the SD card is corrupted. Getting a new one would be the next option.

Final update: The problem is indeed the USB port. I bought a USB 3.0 reader (5.00 euro) and everything is visible, I can copy files, I see the full 64Gb. Problem solved. :-)
