microSD cards & preparing for Marshmallow

2015-11-13, 13:04 PM

What's the current common wisdom on the choice of microSD cards?

  • Get a good brand (esp as failure of a card in a Marshmallow device where the card is assigned as internal memory extension seems likely to wind up in a bootloop/require factory reset)?

  • For general use for Marshmallow internal memory expansion, which specs are most important? Random read/write of small data blocks, or something else?

My advice, from getting kicked in the teeth multiple times (man, that's expensive), is to buy the last generation/half-the-current-size cards.  128GB cards out?  Get 64.  Or you'll be sorry.  And, never get something more than a few % from the average price - it's surely to be a scam.  Additional advice is backups. And if you're going to violate rule #1 of SD card club, make sure you get one from a mfgr that offers a warranty that will leave you with pleasant thing to say.  And then backups are even more important because you *will* need them.
