Shame on Motorola for making us jump through such hoops to get an update on a 2 year old flagship device. Mine is still on the December 2016 security patch and now we have the KRACK vulnerability to worry about. How long will it take Moto to issue a patch for that one? 2 years, maybe?

We'd have to be crazy to buy a Motorola device again.

I am not sure what you are talking about. We haven't had to go through any hoops, just sit and wait. It will or will not arrive. You don't have to do anything.

You are missing the point... if we are not getting security updates, then the longer you have your phone the more insecure your phone becomes.  I don't care about new functionality in Nougat... I care about getting the security fixes (and hopefully having bluetooth issues corrected).

Buy a new phone. Most Android users are still running 4.4 and they haven't seen a security update in their life. Google isn't going to make a patch for 4.4 or 5.

You are wrong on both counts. Most users being on 4.4 (or lower) hasn't been true for some time.

Also, here is the Android security bulletin for October 2017. There are several critical security fixes for Android 4.4 listed.

If you are looking only at the US you are correct about numbers, but worlwide is a different thing.

Now show me a vendor that is going to create and push a patch for 4.x or 5, they aren't. Most vendors are not doing anything for 6.0 and older. Even Google has said they are not supporting Nexus phones on 4, 5 or 6.

I just got a notification "Downloading English (US) - Download size requires Wi-Fi" . I have Wi-Fi turned off because I am 'traveling' and I don't want to turn it on and find out this is Nougat because I won't be ready to install it yet. I'm on Verizon, Marshmallow, not rooted. Is anyone else on Verizon getting this? Is it Nougat?

I'm looking at the statistics Google provides for Android app developers.

https://developer.android.com/about/dashboards/index.html

You stated that "Google isn't going to make a patch for 4.4 or 5." I showed you that Google is still patching 4.4 and 5. If the vendor isn't pushing patches, it is the vendor to blame, not Google.

Google is not supporting Nexus on 4, 5 or 6 because they provided updates to 7 and 8. You shouldn't be expected to support older versions when you have made an upgrade to a supported version readily available.

What do you mean?  Sprint users are upgrading to Nougat, and there's a post that a Verizon customer may be getting it.

why does this depend on carrier?  Bought the phone unlocked directly from Motorola.  Came with 6 installed.

Is the notification coming from the Play Store? Likely it is an app trying to update. System updates usually have their own notification. I'm on Verizon and have not seen anything yet.

You mention you are traveling.

Are you outside of the US?

Do you use Google voice typing or speech recognition?

IIRC, the "downloading English" notification has to do with one or the other...

We all bought the same phone, with no carrier affiliation/branding.  But, when you think about it, it only makes sense that a new software build must be tested for compatibility/usability/etc.

What we all bought was a device that would serve us well if we decided to switch from AT&T to TMo or Verizon, no new phone required.

The flaw in that is that we can switch carriers at any time. A Sprint user who has already upgraded to 7.0 could switch to AT&T today.
