Re: Android (7.0) Nougat Update for Moto X Pure/Style

In the Android world, it's best not to have expectations.  That's how broken I think the update situation is.

Anyway, going by the leaked Pixel Launcher version (v7.1), it might be safe to assume that the Pixel phones are indeed launching with Android 7.1.

I don't think that the launcher version has any link whatsoever to the Android version. The only reason I think they might launch with 7.x.x is because the Pixel devices are very likely to have exclusive features, which are not currently in AOSP to avoid tipping their hand. The launcher is the tip of the iceberg, imo.

As far as expectations, I absolutely expect a major OEM to support their unlocked devices for two years minimum. They were quite proud of their "Fastest to update" title from a month ago, and I doubt they're going to do anything to jeopardize that now.

Someone on reddit in Germany says they have got an OTA update for 6.0.1. Not sure it Motorola are now starting to roll that our moe widespread now.

If so, my guess would be they are calling that the update for this quarter and will then have Nougat for the next quarterly update, perhaps. Who knows.

Ups, Motorola forgot in their SkipTheSevems ad campaign that this year is not only S7, Note 7, and iPhone 7, buy also Android 7! Are they asking us to skip this update, too? Is Motorola hinting they will go directly to 7.1 and roll first updates right after Google launches Pixel phones? What do you think?

LOL... Totally didn't think of that until you posted this, good catch.

Droid life say that Motorola have told them that the Moto z line and g4 will be getting nougat in q4, so anytime from October to the end of the year. No word on the Moto x style.

Considering the massive gutting of the company Lenovo has done as reported yesterday it wouldn't be a shock if we have a real wait in our hands.

According to the press, it's looking like next year is the optimistic estimate.

http://www.androidpolice.com/2016/09/27/motorola-says-that-the-moto-z-and-g4-lines-will-get-nougat-updates-beginning-in-q4/

"It doesn't help that Motorola's reputation has been seriously tainted as of late, especially when it comes to software updates. The manufacturer balked at the idea of providing monthly security patches, to say nothing of abandoned E-series phones and broken promises for flagship updates. Some of that might be because Lenovo, Motorola's owner and manager, is basically strip-mining what's left of the company and firing the vast majority of its staff. And as awful as that situation is, it doesn't particularly matter to customers who just want recent software in a timely manner.

So what's the takeaway here? Motorola will try to get at least one [Moto Z] of seven phone running Nougat before the end of the year. They might get more, but they haven't promised to. And Motorola's promises aren't worth what they used to be, anyway."

I'll have a new phone by then, and it sure as hell won't be one from Lenovorola. Surely won't be recommending one from this company full of broken words either.

Sadly, I agree. Motorola are just not the same company anymore, I read that Lenovo have cut over 90% of the work for since taking over. That's insane, and obvious why they can't get updates out quickly.

I was sold in this phone partly due to the promise of speedy updates, it's clear now though that the company I bought this phone from doesn't really exist anymore.

I think that's the problem Lenovo is realizing.  Why spend the money to update a phone when people will buy a new one after a year or 1.5 years?  Sounds a LOT like old Motorola, where they'd release one major OS update, then forget about it.  But, I expected 1H 2017, if it gets it at all.  Remember, we were supposed to get the Camera2/3 "Professional mode" too.  Doubt that'll happen.

Lenovo has gutted Motorola (Google started it first though), and we knew that would happen, as there are always redundancies when merging operations.

I am also done.  I nearly impulse bought an iPhone 7 Plus 128GB.
