Re: Android (7.0) Nougat Update for Moto X Pure/Style

2017-08-25, 15:22 PM

First, I don't think it's a good idea to install a new release, ie 7.0.0, without any chance of further updates. Any new release is going to be a little buggy.

Second, Lenovo has obviously had a lot of problems getting a "working" update out for this phone. That's tells me there are issues with their hardware.

The only things that make any sense to me is to retain what you have, give your phone to a charity or a friend, or install a competent ROM like LineageOS if you know what you are doing.

But for me, there is no way I will update my phone with a 7.0.0 release from Lenovo after all the problems they have had. With an almost native Android phone coming out with the 7.0.0 release for the Moto X Pure should have been a nobrainer...but it wasn't. That is very telling.

Finally, I wish a moderator would Close the activity on this Post. It's not helping anyone anymore. The only future for the Moto X Pure is in the installation of a Custom ROM....that's where people who need help should be directed.

Looks like you got some bad information. We'll coach that rep. But in the future, the relevant (and only official) information on Software Upgrades is found on our Software Upgrade News Page. He should have referred you there.

Thanks,

WT... !!! Lenovo is not able to update a one year old phone ( yes one year old cause nougat was released in 10/2016 and the moto x style is from 09/2015) plus the Moto x style had a good hardware 3gb of memory and a qualcom 808 processor!!!

If Lenovo an electronic company and a mobile phone manufacture is not able to provide an update for that kind of phone they should change of line of work and may be start selling patatoes for example.

No one here knows what's coming down the road for any phone, nor does anyone here know how buggy any upcoming release will be.

Are you saying that what the forum users consider to be an excessive delay in the rollout is caused by issues in the build?  I have no inside knowledge, but I tend to think that many "delays" aren't delays at all; they're just moving along at a pre-determined schedule, or maybe there's a resource balancing issue.    Let's face it: Moto's development schedule is never going to be fast enough for customers.

I see no reason to close the thread.  Trust me, another will pop up quickly.

One final thing: we never advise people to mod their phones whether in warranty or out.  If there's a show-stopping  build error, Motorola can help.  There isn't always help available with a custom ROM.

Oh, that page that has said, "This device will be upgraded to the Android 7 (Nougat) release, pending partner support." for the last 6 months?

BTW, The phone is unlocked, who exactly are the "partners" that need to approve the phone?

This will be my last Motorola/Lenovo product. Bought this phone late last year as I wanted a stock Android experience but not at Pixel prices. Reasonably good hardware with a good price.

That being said, the lack of support for the software is beyond disappointing. The similarity to stock android should make this an easy update, so I assume this is just now the Motorola business model going forward. With that in mind I'm no longer interested in Motorola/Lenovo products at any price and will upgrade to a new device soon (waiting to see the new generation of Pixels/iPhones). This experience has left such a bad taste I won't even consider other devices other than those from the software source themselves.

Agreed.  I bought my Moto X Pure in May 2016, just 3 months before Nougat's release.  Now Google has just released Oreo and I am stuck indefinitely on MM thanks to Lenovo.  I might try to compile and download my own Oreo image from Google sources.  If I don't succeed, I will look for another phone soon.  But I will never again buy any Lenovo products, whether computers, phones or tablets, that's for sure.

Ahhhh...the partner support.  Anyone who provides driver updates, chip manufacturers, more.  And the carriers will test OS updates, and add their own secrets to the sauce.

And to dispell a rumor going around, that "close to pure Android experience" doesn't mean upgrading the system software is easier.  You can make a simple little change to the stock software and have it wreck something that was thought to be unrelated.  If takes time.    :-(

Interesting that Moto X Style users on stock Nougat are starting to report getting an August 2017 security update... obviously NOT dead yet.
