Re: Choppy call audio after MM upgrade w/VoLTE

So it's been a year and still no fix for this, and none of the Google recommended security patches.  I bought a Moto cause it was supposed to be the BEST of the android phones.    Now it just seems like yet another contributor to the fragmentation problem.   I am going to order an iPhone from Amazon on Friday.  When I do, I will close my Moto Community account and  assume that Moto is going to out of business.  It makes no sense why they sold this phone as the epitome of Google Engineering, then orphaned it.

jason_motox,

Does this mean that a Moto X Pure with stock OS updated to at least Sept or later security patch should have the VoLTE call choppiness on T-Mobile resolved?

TIA...

I can't say definitively, but these changes have significantly reduced the probability of it occurring.  I'll do more testing in various locations on different LTE towers/frequencies and report back.

Now that doesn't mean voice NEVER breaks up.  This is a cell phone.  But, the times when it did, it was very quick and was more like a signal issue (that electronic sounding voice then skip, then immediate return).  I almost expected the previous consistent voice breakup, but it didn't occur.

Unfortunately, I haven't done 1+ hour long calls.  I haven't done that in years on my personal phone.  Someone else will need to do that testing.

Thanks for advice jason_motox.

T-Mobile still not offering any OTA for my MXPE, last T-Mobile OTA is the May 2016 security patch.

Did the SIM-less bootup trick, there was an OTA offered over WiFi, for version "24.221.8.en.US".  "About phone" now indicates "Android security patch level:  September 1, 2016".

So we'll see...

Friendly reminder: The wakelock script I posted earlier eliminates the issue completely.

After using the SIM-less bootup trick to reveal and obtain the Sept 1 2016 patch OTA via WiFi, I then rechecked for OTA with T-Mobile SIM installed.  This time, the Dec 1 2016 patch OTA (24.231.16.en.US) was revealed, so I installed that.

With the Dec 1 patch installed, VoLTE appears to be working fine, no issues noted yet with voice calls or other phone functions.

FWIW...

I don't know if the VoLTE is working but the updates are installing.
Doesn't anyone else find it strange that you have to dig into a forum to find a way to get your phone to get updates?
Isn't this something that every other phone on the market does without having to trick it by removing the sim card?
Just my opinion!

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but to verify VoLTE is working:

First, enable it (Settings > Wireless & networks > More > Cellular networks > Enhanced 4G LTE Mode > ENABLED (toggled "ON").

Then, if you see the "LTE" indicator during voice calls, VoLTE is working.  (Without VoLTE, my MXPE would drop to "H" indicator for HSPA+ mode during voice calls.)

VoLTE apparently still working fine here, no problems, on Dec 1 patch.  :)

That is exactly right.

Hopefully more people start testing again.

Currently my phone on T-Mobile is running the May 2016 (7-8 months later and no OTA update lolol just awesome) security update and doesn't claim to find any OTA updates available. I'll try the SIM-less boot trick on WiFi and see what happens. Unsure why it wouldn't detect the September update if there is one...

You should be on December if you're using an XT1575.
