I think that when it works, it is great.  But I have found it to be very unreliable and very frustrating.  Many times it does not activate with incoming calls or texts.  Often it does not understand what I am saying and tells me we will need to try again later.

The moto voice works good in my case. Even while I'm driving with my car windows open,  if a person in the front passenger seat can hear me clearly, then the moto voice picks it up without any problem.

Also install the language pack specific to your country/region besides the default one and see if there is any improvement.

The moto voice understands better with the same voice which is used to create the launch phrase.

Can someone tell me why this important safety feature isn't even available on the G4 plus, seems a major major step backwards?

the Android Auto app provides much of the same functionality for driving, in fact, that's what I use now instead of the Moto Voice options for driving. Here's why:

  • Android Auto's GUI has been modified to make it easy to read and interact with while driving (I'm talking about navigation, music playback, etc., and not just talking to your device)
  • Audio is played "normally" instead of the odd way Moto Voice does it by simulating a BT phone call.
  • You get the "OK Google" / Google Assistant style of interaction. I never really used Moto Voice when I wasn't driving, but I have a Google Home device, and Android Auto allows me to interact with my phone in a similar way. I always noticed that Moto Voice often hands over your voice request to Google Now anyway, so I'm really just cutting out the middle man. And again, the GUI you get with Android Auto is far easier to read and interact with while driving than the Google Now screens you get when you use Moto Voice.
  • The only drawback I've found to Android Auto is that it doesn't support Waze (yet), so I just run Waze in the background before launching Android Auto. This way I get Waze warnings, whether or not I'm using the navigation feature in Android Auto.

These options do not appear on my G3. Which phone are you using? I'd like a phone where I can use this feature.

I believe the options are different for some phone models and I was talking only about Moto X Pure/Style.

Re: Moto Assist Driving alternative

It is NOT on the newer phones, other than the Moto Z series phones, disappointingly. I have spent hours researching this and talking to several level 2 tech support people at Motorola. PLEASE BRING BACK MOTO VOICE/ TALK TO ME!!! It was the most important feature on the Moto X - X4 phones, or put a larger screen on the X4, WE NEED THIS FEATURE. Why would Motorola go backwards with technology??

The Talk to Me feature was a great safety feature while driving for receiving and answering texts, hands free, as well as while cooking at home, eating, or working at the office, since we could program location addresses for it to engage and operate.

To say that it conflicted or was redundant to Google Assist, is erroneous BS, because i figured out how to use both seamlessly, by turning OFF the "Hey Google" touch free voice control command, i could still use Google Assist with my Moto X4 by saying: "SHOW ME - ASSISTANT" via the Moto Voice app, which i had turned on to respond to voice commands, and Google Assist would open perfectly, just as it would by saying Hey Google, otherwise.. <<-- THIS IS THE SOLUTION. WE NEED THE **bleep** MOTO VOICE!!!!!! SOME PEOPLE HAVE VISUAL DISABILITY, AND YOU ARE PUTTING DRIVERS IN DANGER BY TAKING THE FEATURE AWAY WHICH SOLVED THE PROBLEM OF TEXTING WHILE DRIVING!!!!!!
