This is my first Android experience, and it's not off to a great start. Just opened up my new X4 and started exploring where everything is.
I went to change the wallpaper, and... crash. Tried it again... crash. Oh hey, there's an OS update. So I installed it and tried again... crash.
Of course, wallpaper isn't exactly core functionality. But it's pretty *removed* basic, and shouldn't make it out the door totally broken. That's just embarrassing.
Any other wholly defective areas I should know about before I waste my time trying to troubleshoot them?

When I get a new Android phone and or after any Major update I do a,"Hard Reset" Factory restore.I've come to learn that every now and then one phone might have been used for QC(Quality Control) by a vendor so if even new it might have been messed with.
So I like to start with my own,"Fresh Start",
As I assume you have not yet got too much if any important stuff on the phone follow this video,
This will re-install the updated O/S clean and hopefully your Android will behave
