Moto X4 ring starts very quiet then suddenly gets louder

2018-09-15, 0:48 AM

The ring starts very quiet so I miss at least one full ring.  The phone even plays ring tones really quiet at first when selecting one, then suddenly jumps to a loud volume, in what I can only describe as a terrible user experience.

I can't find any way to fix this.  I found posts for other phones that sound like a similar problem asserting that this might be an intended feature that you can't turn off?  I assume that can't actually be true, as it's a ridiculously poor user experience.  I'm not certain it's actually the ascending ringtone thing though as it seems like it just has a super low volume for a few seconds, then jumps to the set volume.    Can anybody point to how to fix this?  I guess somebody out there might like it, but I assume there has to be a way to turn it off at least.

I did find an app that seems to fix it when I receive a call at the expense of that app running all the time which is not a very good solution, and it still has the strange initial low volume then jump to high volume when selecting ring tones, which just sounds broken.

Hi ThorinL,

Welcome to the community. We are always ready to assist here. This is working as designed. We call this ascending ringtone. It can't be disabled. This is a design of all Motorola phones. It should only ascend for the first few seconds of a 30-second ringtone. We've heard this feedback before and it's been shared with the team. One option is to enable vibrate on ring. That should notify you immediately.

Maybe the UX team that made this decision should be replaced. There is no need for that sort of feature.

I have the same issue with the Moto G6 Plus, is there a fix on this phone?

Just wondering, what's the point of the "ascending" ringtone? Other than you won't hear it for a few seconds when someone is calling and not everyone's ring lasts for 30 seconds since some people will hang up after couple of rings of an unanswered call.

There is no good reason. My guess is that an engineer thought it was a good idea and as Motorola/Lenovo dont appear to have a functioning UX department, it got added and now we are stuck with it, because, you know, custmers don't matter.

I believe this has something to do with android's ability to send a notification to a bluetooth device first - like a earpiece, or a fitbit. I notice that (my fake fitbit is connected all the time) my fitbit starts vibrating (iffy on Pie) and THEN my phone starts ringing.

I also understand that there is a line in build.prop that delays the ring for 3 seconds, on top of the above.  I do not know how to delete that and still receive OTAs - maybe temp install twrp and do it there? fastboot boot twrp.img ?

Please make this an option in the sounds section of the settings app.

I've had a variety of Motorola phones since the original Droid came out. I have really enjoyed using them all but after that 9.0 upgrade came out the whole sound experience with the terrible volume control in the sound settings where one click somewhere near 2/3 up the slider makes it go from the lowest volume to the highest volume I never know which one I will get when I actually get a call. I've never had a phone where I had to adjust volume so much and it's frustrating because I don't know if I'll be getting another Motorola after this one.
