I agree, though NoLED can give you a visual notification from a distance depending on your brightness settings.  It also has audio notifications which most definitely let you know you have unchecked notifications from a distance.  Is it ideal?  No, but it's still much better than Moto Display.  I probably would have returned the phone if I hadn't found this program.

Does the blink setting work for you? No matter what I put for "On time" and "Off time", the screen stays on unti..l it hits the notification timeout. Thanks

Kind of.  Not as good as I would like it to but I did manage to make it work well enough for me.

Here are my settings.

Under Notifications settings (all set to dot icon):

    SMS/MMS is selected

    Missed calls is selected

    Voice mail is selected

    Gmail is selected

Outlook is selected under monitored apps

Under battery saving features:

    Blink is enabled

On time is set to 50 ms

Off time is set to 20

    Keep screen off is selected

Notification Timeout is set to 30 minutes

    Disable touch screen is selected

Brightness level is set to 5%

I have sleep enabled between 12 and 8 AM so audio does not wake me up when I recieve emails.

Under Audio reminder:

    Audio reminder is selected

Ring tone is set to Adara (the ringtone works very well for this purpose)

    Interval is set to 280

Under Miscellaneous:

    Disable backlight is selected

    Auto start is selected

    Hide navigation keys is selected

Again, not perfect but I find these settings work very well for me.  I have yet to miss a notification with it (the audio settings really help out with that).

Thanks. Copied those settings and my screen still stays on the whole time. Maybe I'll contact the developer

I tried contacting the developeer but I think that app has been abandoned.  Do you have notifications in Moto Display enabled?  If so, try disabling it.  You may also need to restart your phone.

I have Moto display turned off. Tried restarting my phone and no difference. Both "Blink" and "Keep screen off" don't seem to do what they are supposed to

How does the blinking flash not blind you?

Why would someone Using an LCD screen would want to have a power consuming feature like the ' Moto Display' turned on when they can use their brain & have a 'Notification light' blink on any notification which would use less battery and also looks so cool and sophisticated.
