10W Wireless Charging

2017-09-22, 15:30 PM

I have the Moto Mod "Moto Style Shell Case with Wireless Charging for Motorola Moto Z Family Cell Phones" for my Z2F.  Its specs on the Motorola web site say "Works on Qi and PMA wireless charging pads.* Dual mode Qi 1.2.3 (10W), PMA 3.0 (5W)"

It works well with all my Qi chargers but only charges at about 5 watts ( ~6watts input measured by input wattmeter and USB current/voltage meter).   I tried it recently on a "CHOETECH Qi Fast Charge Wireless Charger Stand, Model T520" which says "10W output" but again it only charges at 5W.  Choetech has now told me that that ir only supports >5W with the Samsung 7/8 series of phones.

Does anyone know of a Qi charger that will do 10W charging on the "Moto Style Shell Case with Wireless Charging for Motorola Moto Z Family Cell Phones"?

FYI,  My Z2F is the Verizon version w/SW NDX26.122-58-8 and the Style Shell mod was recent updated to SW version 0.55.

I plan to get the back and find a 10W pad... it could be we need one of the newer 3 coil pads. asking to see if anyone knows too.

Re: 10W Wireless Charging

I purchased the Incipio Ghost Qi 15 Wireless Charger and it should do 10W with the wireless charging shell. Is there any change in the display or notification on the Z2 Force to indicate that it is rapidly charging wirlessly instead of slowly wirelessly charging? I didn't see any and was wondering if that would should show up somehow.

I want to try a wireless charging mod but I don't like the nylon one that is currently available. It would be nice if there were more options like a standard plastic mod that had a little tackiness to it like any old TPU case. Also, have the mod include a bumper as well. I would buy that the day it was released. What's the best way to push something like this???

If it doesn't say slowly, then i expect it is going fast.

I have a volt/amp guage for USB - the best i can get my charging pad to show is 9V 0.8A and it still shows charging slowly.

Can you get yours to show charging without the word "slowly"?

It doesn't say "slowly". I just says "wireless charging". I was trying to say that it doesn't say "turbo". I was wondering if 10w would display turbo wireless charging but I guess it does not.

I have not confirmed but I doubt you will get "turbo charging" notification with wireless under any conditions - but the fact that you don't see slow charging is great.

I may have to try that charging pad.

Re: 10W Wireless Charging

OK, so after trying a couple charging pads, I have some answers.

The phone will never say "turbo charging" with a wireless charger. But I have been able to get and verify fast charging. The key seems to be a 15W charging pad and QC charger.

The phone will initially say "charging slowly" but after a few minutes it changes to "charging" and then eventually a time estimate for completion.

With an VA meter i was able to see that the 15W transmitter was delivering 10-12W to the charger and phone. The key is using 12V. I have one other charger that says 10W fast charging, but it only draws 9V from the QC charger and never seems to provide more then 6W - even though the QC spec says 9V@ 3A.

Here is the pad that fast charges for me: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B077PQT5M3/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I have tested with an Aukey QC 3.0 charger, and a Moto QC 2.0 charger (25W).

Edit - charging rate will slow as charge approaches 100%

Can't get moto style shell with wireless charging to fast charge!

2018-01-19, 14:43 PM

The moto style shell with wireless charging says that is handles 10w fast charging, however, I can't seem to get it to charge faster than a 5W pad charges it. I'm purchased the moto mod from motorola.com and using it on a Moto Z Force Droid.

Here's the statement from the product details: "* Fast charging requires compatible wireless charging pad, sold separately. Works on Qi and PMA wireless charging pads."

Does anyone know what Motorola considers a "compatable wireless charging pad" is? Do they have any recommendations?

I've tried two different 10W charging pads and they don't charge any faster than a 5W pad. I tried the Anker PowerPort Wireless 10 coupled with the Anker Quick Charge 3.0 wall adapter. I also tried the Samsung Qi Fast Charge 2.0 pad. I've been using the accubattery app to measure charging speed with screen off. The Anker set up would charge up to 515mA, the Samsung up to about 380mA. I also have an Anker PowerPort Wireless 5 pad (5W) used with a Quick Charge wall adapter, which charges it at 515mA . I know I can't expect turbo charge speeds that I get with the USB C quick charger, that charges at about 2000 mA, but certainly I would expect it to be faster that 515mA.

With all the charging pads I've tried, on screen it says "charging slowly".

Anyone else have any ideas?

I guess Lenovo W03 Fast Wireless Charging Pad is what they mean under "required compatible wireless charging pad, sold separately.

Anyone using it? I'm deciding on what to choose - OMARS that mentioned above as working at 10W or Lenovo W03.

They are pretty similar in size/features like rotatable top part.

W03 is more scratch resistive because of silicone top, have useful carrying case and should be smth like "canonical compatible maximum power" pad while Omars supports 15W charging (LG V30 only as for now) and will be purchase with benefits for future models... Besides i don't believe in such "sudden coincidence" with size and key elements design - the difference may be in plastic outer housing only. Price is identical too.
