Re: WiFi Issues Z2 Force (Verizion)

2018-01-08, 19:56 PM

PSA:

Motorola did NOT certify the Z2 Force for 802.11ac. The official record of the device at the Wi-Fi Alliance shows it certified for b, g, and n ONLY.

That is the primary problem here. Unless the device is certified for a Wi-Fi standard, it cannot be guaranteed to work reliably with said standard.

Also: no Google product is certified, so those of you on a Google Wi-Fi are toast (sorry!) For the folks on that Linksys WRT1900AC router: only the V2 hardware version is certified.

Hope this helps. I'll be posting my findings to Reddit later for the world to see.

Then Moto should correct certification and patch for proper operation, or patch the Z2F so that it doesn't connect via AC.

LOL a funny thing happened to that post of mine showing proof the Z2F was never AC-certified: it's conveniently disappeared from the thread. I'll be going public with my findings to Reddit later, where I'm sure they will have a more receptive audience.

Since mine is now working, perhaps they corrected it in the Oreo update

Perhaps I will take the plunge and do a factory reset tonight. Ugh... what a pain in the a**, but it's the only positive news I've read in 3 months on here. I'll report back my findings!

Maybe you missed the part where the Z2F isn't certified for 802.11ac, which means factory resetting or getting a replacement device won't work. The only fix is for Motorola to properly certify the device and then push a corresponding firmware update out.

I saw that... So, do you think it's a fluke that Waeverette's issue was fixed by doing the update and reset?

It's a band-aid solution/workaround that doesn't solve the core problem. 99.999% of the time when someone tells you to fix something by factory resetting your device or reinstalling your OS (in the case of a PC) it's not a real solution that addresses the core problem. It's a cop-out, at best.

The error here is entirely on Motorola's side. They failed to certify the Z2F for AC and so it can't handle AC connections reliably (note the emphasis.) That last word implies that it may or may not work depending on what you do, but it can't be guaranteed to work.

Leave the 5Ghz network on auto

Strange you wouldn't suggest setting it to AC-only, since the Z2 Force's specs on Motorola's website say it supports AC (see screenshot.) Would you kindly elaborate on why you didn't suggest that? I'm curious.

I would at least try after you get the Oreo update. Mine has been flawless. Certification is optional and doesn't really mean much. Otherwise, certified devices would never have any issues. Mine has been going strong since the reset. The Google WiFi isn't certified either, but it's the best router I've ever had. YMMV. I've searched the Wifi Alliance for 6 devices Sony, LG, Samsung, etc in my house. Not one is on their list.

those things are OLD.

So is the Z2F's Wi-Fi network certification, apparently. No mention of AC support in the Wi-Fi Alliance's records. Can you comment on that?
