Moto Z2 Play Camera distortion

2018-04-29, 7:20 AM

I have an issue with the camera.

As you can see in the attache photo there is a clear image distortion ( my bath tiles are ok  ;) ).

The issue is that portrait photos have the same distortion while panorama's are fine ( because of the distance of course ).

This is a really annoying and not acceptable issue .

Is this an issue of my camera or anyone else is experiencing the same problem ?

Hi Andrea_B,

That's odd it looks like a convex mirror. Have you tried to enable the assistive grid? Please go to Settings of the camera > Toggle on Assistive grid. Also please test in a video in too. Thanks!

The assistive grid is enabled and it confirms that the tiles in the picture are distorted. Tested also in a video with  the same results.

Hi Andrea_B,

Thanks for the reply. Does it also happen in the viewfinder? I will have my team check on this and we'll try to replicate this. Can you please update your profile with current phone, carrier and serial number -- this will help me investigate. Please make sure that the options under Settings > Motorola Privacy are on as well, and let me know (just reply here) if it's okay for me to look at your apps to see if they are a source of problems.

Need help updating your profile? See here

Best regards,

Hi Rich,

thanks for the reply. What do you mean with viewfinder?

If you mean the screen then answer is yes.

Profile updated. Anyway the issue is a lens issue , nothing to do with apps.

I've also installed Camera MX app just to check if there are improvements.....none......therefore the problem is the hardware.

Attached other photos with distortion. And here look at the bottom angle of the left building:

By viewfinder he wants to know whether you are seing this distortion in the screen after you have opened the camera app. Better enable the assistive grid in camera app and look at the tiles.

From the sample shots it looks this is the problem related with hardware, may be with the lens. Better visit your nearest service center and get your device inspected.

Here another nice example.
Nevertheless a friend of mine took the same picture with a Huawei P9  and a similar distortion (less evident than the Z2 play but still remarkable) was present in his photo.
Conclusion: I have the impression that this phenomenon is something related to the lens of every mobile ( Next step for me is to compare with an IPhone ) and is more evident in the Z2 Play ( a mix of pincuscion and barrel distortion in this case).

Look at this article:https://www.quora.com/Some-images-taken-with-smartphones-tend-to-broaden-at-the-corners-Is-this-the-photographers-error-or-are-smartphone-lenses-not-100-suitable-for-capturing-true-images.

Re: Moto Z2 Play Camera distortion

I think I'm getting 'pincushion distortion' with my moto Z2 Play, every smartphone camera has this distortion problem and post software processing reduces it if it is not overcomed by hardware design structure. But here in Z2 play, distortion is much more prominent specially if the subject has feature of something more horizontal or vertical specially if it is captured from a short distance.

I tried my best to matchup with my assistive grid from my viewfinder but this distortion exist both in viewfinder as well as after capturing it.

Today I was comparing with moto G3(TE) with Z2P, in G3(TE) distortion is less.

'G3_TE.jpg' was shot in moto G3 TE
