Re:Moto Z2 Play mic not working.

2020-04-09, 13:09 PM

I experience since today a similar problem with my Z2 play. I cannot be heard by others through phone, messenger or whatsapp voice communication. However, I can record video's with voice, Shazam works, hardware test of the mic is ok ...

What is strange is that when I use it as a phone, and I make little taps on the phone, that impact is heard at the other side. But no voice.

Seems as an app issue or are there several mics on one phone? Anybody an idea how to solve this?

I now checked with an external mic and that works fine.

Hi PitSwinnen,

Thanks for posting on the thread. Does it only happen with those apps you mentioned? You can test the microphone in the Device Help app > Hardware Test > Microphone. Let me know the results. Thanks.

That's what I meant with hardware test: I did that and it works.

It's only when using phone/whatsapp/messenger that sound does not go through. If I record a video, I clearly hear the sound. So if there is only one mic in a Z2 play, then it's due a software issue I suppose.

Hi PitSwinnen,

Thanks for confirming. At this point I suggest doing factory data reset. Kindly backup your files but it is recommended not to restore your apps/backup before testing the microphone and confirming it's working with stock apps.

Settings > System > Reset > Factory Data Reset.

Hope that helps. Thanks.

I've done a factory reset. No changes. Hardware test: Mic is working. Grab a video: Mic is working. Phone call: no voice coming through. If I hit ligthly on the Mic with my nail: tap is heard through the phone, but no voice.

Hi PitSwinnen,

It sounds like a hardware failure with the front microphone. Make sure you did not restore your apps/backup after doing the factory data reset. That should fix it, otherwise, I recommend submitting it to service to do possible repair.
