Z2 Play battery is bloating...

2019-02-13, 17:50 PM

My Z2 Play is about 1 1/2 years old now and the battery is bloating and pushing the screen out of the phone.

I still have maybe eight payments left on this contract phone (Verizon), and of course...is out of warranty.

I talked to Verizon and they, of course, told me I could pay off the remainder of the phone (around $120.00) and then renue my contract and buy a new phone.

However, I can buy a lessor phone for the same money and just keep paying for my phone until my contract is up...or get this one fixed!

Not sure if it is worth fixing now...as I'm not sure if I want to commit to more contract with Verizon.

Even though they have the best coverage...their customer service the last few years has been less than acceptable.

Any thoughts on this?

prepaid carrier, used flagship unlocked or same as carrier, call me in the morning!

seriously no reason to go contract with wireless and if you have any choice other than verizon i say drop them.

My phone is unlocked, as soon as i was able to move from their monopoly coverage area i got a sim card for $1 and switched to another carrier.

Pay off the phone, toss it, lesson learned.

Hi JohnD10,

Thanks for reaching out and I understand your sentiments about this. If the battery is swollen in your device, our next step is to have it replaced. You may check this link for the warranty options that are being offered by Motorola. Let me know if you have questions.

Regards,

Re: Swollen battery on my Moto Z

Same problem here on a z2Play. Gets worse if I travel to altitude as the gases expand. The case is just to tight for the battery. First Motorola to do this after owning a dozen. I guess Chinese move isn't panning out as the parts are now subgrade specs. Bought a battery and screen bonding kit to swap it out and then will sell the phone. The phone acts badly anyway sometimes freezing for 15 seconds at a time.

It will cost at least $150 in parts and labour to have a new battery installed, and the rest of your phone will still be 1.5 years old, so if you can get a new phone at the same mid-range quality I would do that.

If it were me I would pay the $120...  get a Z3 Play from Verizon, and sell the Z2 Play for parts.

I would say the choice is a no brainer.  You're not going to get a very good replacement phone for the same $120 if you buy one to finish your contract.  Better to give that $120 to Verizon and get another $0 mid-range phone on a new contract.

And you would get that $120 or more back by selling the Z2 Play for parts.  The display with digitizer part alone is worth that.  I would stop using it before the issue gets worse.

^ wow, the nicest way I can put it is that I don't I agree with that at all. Do you work for Verizon? I failed to see how anything in that statement is accurate or would be advantageous to this user? Mid-range phone price is 100 to $150 on a used and refurbished Market. Carriers and resellers are plentiful. Why Pay More for a new phone of questionable quality when you can buy a used phone of questionable quality and go with a cheaper carrier? Also to finance a phone is the only reason to go with carrier contract oh, they don't subsidize anymore. I don't really think a hundred to $150 is worth subsidizing or financing. If the phone only last a year, I'm down to pay that amount every year instead of paying four times that amount every 3 or 4 years. Could not disagree more with the above.
