Hi BobGowen,

Thank you for posting. I would suggest sending the phone for a replacement. You can click on this link here to get started for a replacement request.

Best regards,

I called you (Motorola) and was told it would be $129 to swap out.  I am still making payments on the phone, as it's less than two years. I would think that as this seems to be a recurring issue (swollen battery), the company should take responsibility for their defect.

Sorry to hear about your issues.  Call back, call again and ask to speak to a higher level if need be.  But....the warranty is 12 months.  The warranty is independent and separate from any monthly payment plan.  Kind of like financing a car for 48 months with a 36 month warranty.  Once the warranty is expired, it's expired and you are still making payments.  It's unfortunate that the carriers offer interest free payments for 24 months on all phones when the phones themselves only have a 12 month warranty.

Every thread I have seen about the swollen battery says it happens just after 12 months, hmmm...

Most have come from the z2 force which costs twice as much as z2 play when it came on and the only benefit is it is supposed to be made stronger, harder to break glass etc haha.

I think the manufacturer whatever they call themselves this week google/lenovo/motorola knew this was happening when they made the phone and the cost of replacing in warranty and the cost of rolling back r&d was not worth it to them, so everyone who buys gets ripped off instead.

Very expensive lesson for OP but hopefully he can get money back from credit card consumer protection, read your credit card contract OP if you bought with it. Might be worth a phone call to recoup some of the loss you took trusting motorola to produce a decent product and honor your purchase.

In reading about battery swelling, and that it could be from overcharging, I wonder if my battery moto mod, which keeps phone battery charged, is the problem. Phone never gets much below 80% before mod recharges.  Oh well, bought a new phone yesterday, and for 1st time in 5 years it’s not a Motorola.

Seems far fetched bro.  Lithium is resiliant and the phone is it's running and Android is booted all the way up, the OS has software safety checks for overcharging, overhearing, etc.  Moreso since Samsung s7 exploded in some people's pocket from it (lol yikes!)

I doubt it's from anything you did.

Same thing happened to my Z2 Play.  I have had it since August 2017 (just over two years).  I recently noticed the battery didn't seem to be holding a charge as long and it seemed to be getting very warm.

Checking the forums, I see this has happened to other Moto phones too. :smileysad:

I wish there was a free replacement on these.

Sorry but I have the EXACT same problem.  Wonder if it could catch fire onboard an aircraft??? Lenovo should do some remedy or does it take a Class Action suit??

Hi ddanielson,

A swollen battery is not a safety issue. It is rare but typically occurs only on older batteries, and there is no danger from high heat, etc. If your phone is in warranty when it happens, it is fully covered. Considering your situation, it would definitely be ideal to have the phone serviced. You can check the options here on this link. If you'd like to check our walk-in service, I would suggest contacting them to confirm availability. Please let me know if I can help you further with that. Thanks & stay safe.
