Re:Z2 play battery swelling pushing screen out

2020-08-26, 13:02 PM

I'm not so sure this is a rare occurrence.

After my battery swelled up last October 2019 (see above), I took my Z2 Play into an authorized Moto repair center here in the USA and had them replace the battery.  Now, less than one year later (August 2020), the new replacement battery is swelling up and pushing the screen away from the main body of the phone.

(It has NOT yet reached the expansion of the Z2 Play battery shown in this photo in this article about swollen batteries though)

https://www.tomsguide.com/reference/smartphone-swollen-battery

I have really enjoyed my Z2 Play, but can't see plunking down $100.00 USD for replacement batteries every few months.  Hopefully, Moto has changed who they source their batteries from now.

Going to get a new phone (and it's NOT going to be a Moto Z series).

Hi Wahter,

Sorry to know about your experience. Unfortunately, if that is the case, it would be the best if you will send the device for repair/replacement. I am more than willing to help you with that to make your experience with us or the situation better. Just don't hesitate to let me know. Thanks.

Best regards,

It may not be a safety issue.  But when the phone stops working it is a problem.  I now have a phone with no display.  Not much of a problem ????

Hi Jim6427,

I'm sorry to know you're experiencing this. A swollen battery could affect some functions of the phone such as what you're experiencing. If the display isn't working due to this, like I mentioned it would be the best if we will have your phone repaired/replaced. If you're in warranty it is fully covered. If you want to more options please let me know. Thanks.

Best regards,

Same issue with the LCD popping out, the phone was problematic from the first week. Motorola seems to be hit or miss for me for mobile phones.

@Agent_Rich  - Not sure what you can do.  My Z2 Play phone is out of warranty and the replacement battery only has a 90 day warranty.

Last year, I took it to CPR for repair and they are listed on the Moto website as an authorized repair center for Moto phones.  The tech there even told me the battery was more expensive since it's a genuine Moto brand battery.

I was trying to be extra careful with the replacement battery and not even leaving it charged overnight.  Really disappointing that the replacement battery didn't even last one year.

As mentioned, I can't see plunking down $100.00 USD for replacement batteries every few months.

Hi Wahter,

Thank you for sharing your experience. I'm not entirely sure about the cost for these type of repairs but I'll ask around and I'll see what I can do.
