Android Pie Update

2019-06-25, 23:47 PM

Hello everyone,

Delivering any Android upgrade is a complex process. For a variety of reasons, some US Moto Z2 Force models will not receive the Android 9 “Pie” update. The Moto Z2 Force model sold by Verizon will receive Pie as it is necessary to enable the 5G Moto Mod. We are committed to providing two years of Android security updates on all Moto Z2 force devices. While we always caution that our update plans may change, Motorola regrets any inconvenience or disappointment this may cause our loyal consumers. For additional information regarding if your phone will get the update please check the update page in your region as all pages have been updated.

Well I guess after this, we won't be loyal customers anymore.  Motorola Tom, you being sorry is worthless.  Motorola/Lenovo by not standing with the customers that bought it's last flagship phone is throwing away the customers which were less price sensitive and supporters of the brand.

What's really bad is that they were able to update for 1 our of the 4 vendors, which means that it is do-able, but they are too lazy to provide the update for the other three vendors. Between this news and the news that the Z4 will only get one update, I can't see a scenario where I would spend more than $250 on a Moto phone.

I understand this is not personally within your control, please realize everything I am about to say is directed at Lenovo.

This is completely unacceptable. I have been a loyal Motorola customer since the original RAZR, and the way we have been treated over the past decade has been too much. I really enjoy Motorola's hardware and software, but to promise the Pie update, take a year to deliver it, and then rip the carpet out from under us at the last second is the final straw for me.

I know nobody will read or care, but Motorola has had a terrible history with timely updates in the past 5 years or so, and despite my love for the Moto Mods platform, this will be my last Motorola phone.

This is beyond frustrating.

Yep, same here.  My Z2 Force has been a great device for me & my wife (one of the better ones I've ever owned), but one of the big draws was that it was supposed to get Pie.  After being strung along about this update for months, only to have it dropped without warning, I'm done.

I might not even completely care about getting 9.0, but 8.0 has so many known issues, including with bluetooth, my car and headphones constantly disconnect and reconnect. 8.1 resolved that issue and we diddn't even get that update. w.t.f. Very pissed to see this news today.

I didn't realize 8.1 solved Bluetooth problems.  My wife is always complaining about her car connection.  I really want the built-in SMS backup in 8.1, but, nope, we're stuck on 8.0.

The Motorola support page says the following about the T-Mobile Z2 Force:

 moto z2 force

This device will remain on Android™ 8.1 Oreo™.

More lies.  Get your stuff together, Moto.

My apologies for the typo. We got the Software Upgrade page corrected.

Tom, thank you for your quick response.  (Though I'd hoped to hear that we'd actually not be stuck on 8.0 in perpetuity!)

Re: Android Pie Update

Well, it's been a good 9-10 year run Motorola. This seals the deal that I will be getting the Pixel when I upgrade in November. I understood not getting 8.1 to focus on 9, but now 9 isn't even coming.

Say what you want about Apple, but the support they provide (timely security updates/timely new OS releases) for 'legacy' (aka 6+month old) devices is hands down the best. They aren't a hit-it-and-quit-it company simply trying to make a quick buck. There's a reason why Google got into the hardware game on their own, and I'm glad they did.

The idea that these phones cost $800+ and can't be guaranteed to get the latest software for two years is absurd. A competently managed IT group can easily handle two major software releases ESPECIALLY when they are not completely re-writing the entire UI. Heck, most of the UI is stock anyway.

What do I know anyway.... Motorola is profitable for the first time since anyone can remember ?‍♂️. Good luck basing your entire business model on budget phones!

Bad move Lenovo.  I have been a Moto user since RAZR V3, but this move has made the Google Pixel and One Plus switch device decision for me.  I'm done with Moto.  Goodbye.

My 10 year old nephew was going to get this phone and I can’t stomach given him this POS.   I wish I never bought into the whole stock android.   My wife bought me the turbo pack moto mod and is the main reason I never traded the phone in towards the one plus phone or the iPhone XR deal that T-Mobile had and now they just screw us.   And moto Tom I’m so sorry that we did this to you it’s not our fault.

Re: Android Pie Update

Bye-Bye Motorola.

Since the Atrix 2 i had many motorola phones - Atrix 2, G1, X1, Droid Mini, G2, X Play, G4 Plus, Z Play, Z2 Play, X4, Z3 Play, Z2 Force- but this move is not acceptable for me. It is disgusting to disregard customers to such an extent. The G6, G6 Play got sooner the Pie update than the Z2 Force? Some mod cost more than a G6 - its ridiculous!

+ the Android Enterprise requirements are not met from May. February security patch in the end of June?

Re: Android Pie Update

Sorry you have to be the bearer of bad news. Tons of these phone were sold even recently  as they were being dumped at good prices late last year and early this year and many bought under the premise and advertising of getting the 9.0 / being update-able ..I would not be surprised to see a class action popup over this. I for one will be very weary to ever buy another Motorola/Lenovo product period and will advise others the same.  MY wife my daughter and my son all have your brand phones.  My daughter has a new Motorola phone setting new in box for her birthday. Great timing though for immediate impact my son was about to get a g7 power, and my father just broke his phone.  I will also be sure to post this experience on every sale that get posted on the deal websites I frequent for at least the next year..

To hear that Verizon is getting the update is even worse as it the same hardware with different firmware.
