Can apps be moved from internal storage to external storage and..........

2017-10-14, 19:40 PM

If I do, will they still function at the same level as when in internal storage?

This appears to be a duplicate subject but I have looked at the others suggested and did not see my specific question answered.

I apologize if it has be answered elsewhere and would appreciate a link if it has.

If the card is formatted as external, no.

If card is formatted as internal, then maybe.  It depends on app. And it depends on card how it performs.  No cards are as fast as internal phone storage.  Many problems exist when cards are formatted as internal. I advise against this.

+1 on the advise against suggestion.  There are just too many posts all over tech forums of Adoptive Internal Storage going wrong and apps not working correctly, phone not working correctly, etc.  And once you make that card Adoptive Internal you can't use it in another device or access the files stored on it.  Unless your internal 32 GB is full I would recommend just using the SD card as external and store music, pics, etc on the card and apps on internal memory.

Thanks for both replys. I will take your suggestions and not internalize the SD card. Now I wish I had bought a cheaper one.

With the above advice being taken, can someone explain how to get photos and videos to be stored directly to the SD card and not in internal memory that has to be moved? That is more trouble than it's worth.

Actually it is simpler to use the card as external storage. The camera app settings, has an option to save photos and videos to sd card - that is all you do. Music you transfer over, is done just like it is if you had no sd card, but you pick the sd card when transferring from PC.

It is more work if you format the sd card as internal, because, although it sounds seamless it is not. Not everying moves to the adopted sd card, and the user is left trying to figure out what will move and what won't. And why they still run out of internal storage, even though they have an adopted sd card.

Very few people fill up the phones internal storage with apps, and really need the adpoted storage. Yet for some reason, many users get a new phone, and the first thing they want to do is expand the internal storage. Adopted storage was not designed to be used this way, it is really a last resort. Motorola removed the option on the new Z2 Force - likely due to all the problems users have with it.

Using the SD card as additional, non-adopted storage, is how it always was before android 6.

Open the Camera app > swipe from left to right to open the Settings menu.  And there under General > Storage tap to set either Internal or Card.

If you download music from Google Play you can do the same inside its App Settings and then all pics & music are saved to your card.

This is turning out to be my favorite forum. Lots of good info with no condescending attitudes for users that don't live and breath tech but just want to use their phone as efficiently as possible.

Good deal.  In the years I have been a member of this Forum I have seen a lot of that, friendly people posting & trying to help each other in a professional manner.

In order to move existing photos, videos, music to the sd card open filemanager and then open the hamburger menu.  Tap One Key Storage. It was the only friendly way to do it I have found.
