Moto Display Doesn't Always Work

2016-12-22, 19:26 PM

I was at work yesterday with my 5 day old Moto Z Play on my desk, and I noticed that when I waved my hand over the phone, Moto Display didn't activate. Nothing happened. No clock, no notifications, nothing - just a blank screen. It does activate if I turn or lift the move up. I chatted with Amazon and requested a replacement phone, and they sent me one. When I got home, I noticed that waving my hand over both of the phones activated Moto Display. I brought my original phone back to work today and tried it again, and waving my hand over it once again does not work.

Does anyone have any idea what's going on? Is this something that's wrong with the phone itself? Or could it be something with my office environment? Is there some setting that activates when on a certain wifi network that I don't know about?

Hi iketricktor,

Have you checked if Moto Display is enabled? Tap Moto > Display > toggle it on

Hope it helps.

Yes, it is enabled. Clearly, since it works at home.

Hi iketricktor,

Can you try to enable the safe mode? It will help us determine if there are apps that might be causing the issue.

The sensors that activate moto display are a combination of infrared emitter and receiver.  Ir light reflected/interrupted off your hand triggers moto display.

If the problem exists only at work, then something in your work environment is the cause. I have never heard of this before, but i guess it is possible. Does the new replacement also fail at work?

Not sure if the new replacement fails at work. The new replacement had major issues with the touchscreen so I didn't end up using it.

Hi iketricktor,

I am sorry to hear that safe mode did not work. If that would be the case, we suggest to a perform factory reset. Hope it works.

I have a Turbo 2 and a Z play. I can tell you the T2 display will activate far more often than the play. The T2  will reactivate right after it turns off. The play seams to have a delay or something of the sort. I thougt it was broken for a while myself. I'm not sure if this is the same for the whole Z family or maby its just a mid-range vs flagship type of thing.
