I'm having the same problem as well. Yesterday around 4pm EST my microphone stopped working properly. This is a Moto Z2 force. The microphone picks up a little sound but certainly not enough to easily decipher a conversation.
I have tried:
-a whatsapp call
-google assistant (sometimes able to key off my voice... most of the time not now)
-normal phone calls
-cleaning around the microphone (no case is covering it)
-trading sims with my wife
I'd prefer not to do a factory reset unless absolutely nessecary, as I read in this forum that it didn't work for at least 1 other person.
Not really sure where to go from here?
Sorry to hear that. If the mic still doesn't work in Safe Mode and it also fails through hardware test, then a factory reset probably won't help. It sounds like a hardware failure, and you oroprobaneed a new phone or a repair.

Thanks for the post, just merged your post here. May I know what troubleshooting steps you've tried and done?

Were these regular phone calls or VOLTE calls? Do you do the same with calls using third-party apps?

Can you please check if there's any dirt or lint in the microphone? Also, try making a call with third-party apps like Messenger see if there's a difference.

Thanks for checking. In this case, I would recommend doing a factory data reset without restore (Settings > System > Reset > Factory data reset). Backup your files before doing it so you won't lose any of your important files. Once done, test the mic again and see if there's any improvement, otherwise, it's possible a hardware failure and we recommend sending it for repair/replacement.
