Two years ago, i bought a Moto Z Play. I did not get any security update since august 2018!
My colleauge got a Moto G5 and is getting still security updates. Serious?
The cheaper phone is still save and the better one is getting nothing? Really?
Someone could explain this?

Strange my G4 , G5 get them
I gifted a Z2 which got nearly every week.
Maybe the Z does not need that many updates. And that Z2 went to an excluded continent even .
Z's are not that expensive. I payed less for the Z2 then for both G's.
Btw. no update, no more Lenovo phones, even in my supported business companies and
even at all my friends!

Motorola is very good in updates, like huawei. Lot better then Samsung or bad iPhone updates. Sometimes a motorola forces an update if you don't act , especially the Z2 did that. Will ask you a few times, eventually it will do by itself and reboot. Are you sure this did not happen with you? Check your version. If OK should be on android 8.0 Oreo or even on 9. The Z2 got 9

The Moto G5 was released a year after the Moto Z Play. I don't know what the latest security update you have on the G5 but that would probably be the reason why. We are currently on the fourth series of the Z family of phones and we had 2 full android version updates to the Z Play (from Marshmallow to Oreo). I belive the G5 went only from Nougat to Oreo.

I hope you are happy with whatever phone you end up getting. I don't work for Motorola. I just noted that the phones were manufactured at a different time and hence they would have a different cycle for support. If you were to buy a Moto Z Play or a Moto G5 today I'm sure both are at the end of life for security updates so you wouldn't get any updates even though you just bought them.
