Re: Moto Z - extreme battery drain after 7.1.1 update

2017-12-24, 22:07 PM

After updating to 7.1.1 my Moto Z is basically unusable due to rapid battery drain. I have to tether it to an Anker battery full time.

How/where can I get this fixed? Device is barely over 1 year old. This is not acceptable!

Well... I hate to tell you guys, but waiting for the next release is a waste of time. You need to replace the battery.

My phone was losing charge extremely fast (lately it would not even last a minute or so, going very fast down from 100% charge to around 70% and then shutting off). AccuBattery was indicating that the battery capacity went down to ~160 mAh and that is from ~2600mAh!

So, I got a new battery. GV30, SNN5972A:

The phone was disassembled, the old battery was taken out. Here it is:

The new was plugged in. Switching on ... it shows 20% charge (the battery comes precharged, but looses charge before it gets installed, this is normal). I put max load including the brightest screen, etc. My old battery would start going down like crazy. This one continued to stay at 20%!

So, here is my point: swapping the battery DOES FIX the problem!

The only issue I got is that the black battery is just a little bit thicker (around by 0.1-0.2 mm) which is enough not to be able to properly put the screen back (you need to take the screen off to replace the battery).  So, now I am in search for another replacement battery that would fit ulike this black one (do not buy the black one!).  As it turn out there is ZERO offers on the market that would show exactly the same battery as I extracted out of the phone - ONLY COMPATIBLEs (four or five kinds).

The same here (argentina)... The battery Run short in a couple of Hours. I bought two others moto phones AND worked so fine. I have a moto z force, AND with the last upgrade to 7.1.1 the battery began to fail. If moto don't fix it soon, i Will throw to garbage and purchase a iPhone... I so f#cking tired of Samsung first, AND now moto/android.

I think in US you have pretty good tradition of filling class action suits - this might be usefull in this case.

Same issue here, Serbia. Warranty is two years, but it looks like it's just 6m for battery.

Edit: Factory reset did not help.

Usually 6m is for batery that can be replaced by user.

If battery is built in then it's covered by device 2yr warranty/customer protection.

Great hint, I will try to force Telenor to accept warranty.

The battery isn't the problem. The software is reading the battery status incorrectly. Replacing the battery won't help.
