Re: Moto Z - extreme battery drain after 7.1.1 update

It will not help, battery is degraded and factory reset helps only when yoou have some drain from installed apps.

Is your device getting hot again at the bottom left part on the backside?
If that's not the case, then we can more or less rule out a software problem but the battery must be of bad quality and will last only as many loading cycles as one creates 9-12 months.

Extremely unusable Moto Z. Costed a ton and still no support from Lenovo. Time to ditch Moto and Lenovo, for their irresponsible QA work with 7.1.1 and also no fix yet. My phone needs charging every 30 mins and also factory reset (hard, soft) both didn't help. This is definitely a problem after the 7.1.1. So painful that your primary phone is unusable and completely helpless.

Lenovo is going to loose a lot of customers because of not working on a fix for this and helping their customers.

I think you'll find the same results if you use a Moto mod to charge your phone. Before I got mine repaired the 3490 mAh pack would charge the phone fully and still have 40% left once done. That amount would charge the phone to 80%... Thus the mod was good for 180%. 3490 is not 180% of 2600.

After the repair a fully charged mod did not fully charge phone... Typically the mod hits 0% after the phone has reached a 90% charge. That level is consistent with Motorolas claims for the mod.

No, whatever the update does, it most certainly affects the amount of charge the phone battery will accept. It doesn't actually use more power to run the phone. But rather, your phone battery loses between 50-80% of its capacity. I have found the accubattery app is pretty close in telling you how badly your phone has been affected.

So using accubattery mine says 87%. Is that around normal or is there an issue? I have 2255 mAh in estimated capacity.

Can we try reaching out to Tech Reporter's(Android Authority, cnet etc...) and make moto to take resposibility to fix this issue ? I tried sending direct messages to Twitter accounts of both Motorola and Google and still no help.

Comletely unsatisfied with no response while they continue to sell many devices main stream .

Okay guys, I got something interesting for you:
I activated a new Moto Z (XT1650-03; RETEU) just a week ago that I bought in 05/2017. The first task was to install the OTA upgrads (it felt like there were 10 from them) upgrading from Android 6 up to the latest 7.1.1 including the December 2017-patch. I factory defaultet the phone inbetween and after the final 12/2017-upgrade and it runs just fine now.

AccuBattery reports about <=5% combined battery drain per hour based on 10 sessions within the last 7 days. The reported battery capacity is 2692 mAh while the desigend capacity is 2600 mAh.

To make it short: the battery feels perfectly fine.
Now comes the interesting part: on my old Moto Z which had battery issues after upgrading to 7.1.1 I could the device becoming warm at the bottom left on the backside of the device.

My new one does NOT have this problem, it stays cool most of the time and only gets a little warm when I run heavy actions like upgrading 10 apps from playstore in a row or so.

Conclusions:

- The age of the battery does not seem to be the problem here, the 7-8 months in the storage did not harm it.

- The problems with battery drain may result from:

1.  premature aging of the battery caused by the amount of loading cycles one experiences within about a year

2. software issues caused by the 7.1.1 upgrade on phones that have heavily been used.

To rule out (2), I urge you to factory default your phones instead of just clearing the cache and check the status afterwards. If we see them running fine (keep in mind that your batteries have been used for a year) we know that this must be a software problem. If they don't, we know that the battery ages too fast and is of bad quality, reason (1).

I know that factory defaulting sucks, but with Android 7 restoring apps works like a charm, but still app's data is lost and they need to be setup again.

Wouldn't number one happen just as the phone is being charged regardless of this current issue?

I'm not complaining as I know there are people such as yourself who are suffering worse than I am. I'm just asking with all those problems aside are those normal numbers or should I be worried about any issues arising?

87% would be a normal amount of degradation after 9 months to a year of moderate use.  Sounds like you've lost about an hour of battery life since you got it.  That's still pretty good and you'll find most devices are like that after a year or so.
