Re: Moto Z - extreme battery drain after 7.1.1 update

2018-02-26, 16:26 PM

My device has been in warranty repair (Germany) for 41 days waiting for two separate parts, ought to be shipped now.

I'm very curious how will it'll perform when it arrives.

I probably will turn back from turbo-charging for I while until I can replace it with a device that actually works and hope it stays intact enough so I can at least sell it as a working device.

I'm so done with this, my device that is still less than a year old has been in repair for a total of three times and 60 days.

I guess they broke the display glass when opening your device.
I'm curious: Did you learn from arvato which parts had to be ordered?

I bought a Z 1650-03 in April 2017. SoT was solid 4-5 hours. I run very few apps. There are about 25 apps or so in my drawer. Also all Google and a few Amazon plus one banking app. Screen at maybe 65% and on auto-brightness. Mainly strong Wi-Fi and good LTE coverage.

Sure enough 7.1.1 in August cut my SoT to 2 hours.

I got a replacement. It's been on 7.1.1 since September and was around 4 SoT but now 2 hours. Since December security patch. It doesn't ever run hot. And I can lose 20 or 30% at night. Whereas before it was 1 or 2%.

Lenovo/Motorola Motability are a disgrace. I don't believe it's the SoC. It could be the battery if it's from a no name supplier. I trust reputable suppliers like Sanyo/Panasonic, Sony, LG Chem etc.

I guess there is an outside chance it's a software flaw and Oreo will fix it soon. Otherwise the Z is worthless without a power pack mod. Next time I'm buying a Pixel, Nokia or even OnePlus. Never a Moto/Lenovo again.

It's made by LG Chem in China, but I don't trust turbo charging, it's not the QC 3.0 algorithm supported by the Snapdragon 820.

Lenovo should have paid 50 cents per unit QC 3.0 licensing fees to Qualcomm or whatever they are. Or used USB-PD like Google. What was the point of creating another fast charge system. And it's probably a software glitch with Turbo charge that is screwing up our batteries. Rather than a problem with the chemistry of the lithium ion cells.

Don't want to rain on the Oreo parade... but.... my Buddy just got the Feb. Oreo patch set for his Pixel 2+... and his battery life is down to under 8 hours (previously 24 hours), the phone is 6 months old......  Not sure what Google is doing but it's a mess

My God. It makes me want to get an iPhone 8+. Or hunt down an LG V20 that had the removable battery.

I'm not sure why you said "or even oneplus" I think oneplus is much much better phone than moto z. I got oneplus 3t 6 months longer (18 months ) than moto z and it can last one day on fully charged battery.

Dash charging is faster than Turbo charcharging and Accubattery is saying that 3t battery is health in 91%. Oreo since few months. No any issue whatsoever with Op3t.

Also I recommend OP to my in law and he bought OP5. He is saying that its the best phone ever.

So as I said before I'll dissuaded moto to all my friends.

For the benefit of our new posters and those who won't take any time to read back 74 pages,  I will state again what I believe is the cause (after my experience and 100's of others on here) of this problem.

Not that it really matters at this point.

Something within the 7.1.1 update is causing the problem..Period!!

Just like the Apple thing that's going on, the batteries are toast.

Hook up a battery Mod? Sure...Gets you some extra time , but your still screwed.

Brand new phones, or those only several months old ( my case)  were rendered practically unusable after they downloaded and installed 7.1.1.

Once the battery is damaged ( think Apple) only a replacement or repair will fix this.

A software update, such as Oreo, cannot fix a hardware failure.

Speculate and play with your phones all you want. The end result is the same.
