NFC without Mastercard Approval

2017-05-05, 15:30 PM

I bought the Moto Z with NFC (XT1650-03) only to find out that there seems to be no approval by Mastercard for this phone.

Please see here: http://mastercard-mobilepartner.com/approvals.html

Has Motorola/Lenovo forgotten to test/approve this phone model or is the NFC implementation in this phone not secure/reliable?

A premium phone needs a mobile payment option!

Regards, Juergen

It looks like Mastercard hasn't approved a lot of recent phones... they just are not on the list yet.

Have you looked at Android Pay? It is a more brand agnostic.

Thanks for the quick reply!

The Mastercard list may be not on the latest revision but they list at least the Moto Z Play, so the Z model should be there too.

It's sad but Android Pay is still not available in Germany and many other countries in Europe.

By the way, the universal approval process made by EMVCo does not even list one single Motorola/Lenovo phone:

There are so many competing certifications, I assume Motorola is picking the ones it considers most popular.

As a consumer, my liability for credit card transactions is basically zero. I am less concerned about certification, and more concerned about interoperability. I trust Google and Motorola as much as anyone else to make sure the implementation of the credit card transaction is secure.

For me, there is more concern about the merchant, then my phone. I worry a lot more about the merchant terminal, and the merchant storage and transmission of data.
