USB host mode disables after some seconds

2017-11-06, 19:53 PM

Hello :)

I've been testing this and I've discovered that my Moto Z is successfully activating host mode (when a usb hub or device is plugged in via a USB-C adapter), and after some arbitrary number of seconds it stops working. It has varied between being consistently 48 seconds after multiple attempts, 53 seconds after multiple attempts, etc.

This occurs when I plug in a USB hub, and then I can plug in USB devices to that hub.

This also occurs using an adapter to a ThermApp thermal camera.

The time is from the initial activation of host mode. Plugging in additional devices (a usb stick to the hub) does not extend the time Host mode remains active.

Once the time is up, the light on the usb hub I was testing with goes out, so I was able to get the time accurately.

I also timed it with the thermal camera by waiting until the stream stops working.

Phone info:

Moto Z Droid

Android Version 7.1.1

Config version F16.MOT.XT1650.0

Baseband Version M8996_1239.53.01.126.01R SVS

Build number NCLS26.118-23-1-1

The strange regularity of the timing leads me to guess it's more likely a software bug and not a hardware bug. Of course, anything is possible :)

What do you all think?

Thanks!

Inexplicably [after a few reboots] the problem has resolved itself and all of my devices are staying connected. I made no changes on my phone except to enable USB debugging in preparation to get the bug report. In the case that the problem resurfaces, I'll make a bug report and start a new thread!

Thanks for your assistance :)

I can confirm that this has been happening to me with a USB-C flash drive. I will plug it in, the phone will recognize it, and then I can browse the files on it. But then after about 10-30 seconds it just ejects itself. I thought it was the drive acting up, but it sounds like it's the phone. The problems with this phone keep mounting. I've been a loyal Moto customer for many years, but after this phone I'm going Pixel and never looking back.

Hi Omnistache

Can you provide us the make/model of the OTG devices you used? And can you also send a bug report regarding this. Bug report will collect information about your current device state.

Below are the steps for getting bug report:

  1. Go to Settings -> About Phone -> Tap on Build number seven times on the build number to enable a new Settings item, Developer options.
  2. Go to Settings ->Developer options -> Enable USB debugging > Toggle On
  3. Enable Settings -> Developer options -> Enable Bug Report shortcut > Toggle On
  4. Once the issue is reproduced: Go to Settings -> Developer options -> Click on take bug report or Press Power button and then choose Bug Report from the Power down menu.
  5. Wait for some time until the bug report is collected. It takes around 3 to 4 minutes to collect the Bug Report.
  6. Then upload the BugReport to your personal Google Drive and then share the link to the BugReport on the forums in a reply or via a private message.
  7. Provide observations of what you saw happen right before the bug report was taken. Please indicate the local time when you observed the behavior.

Regards,
Ella

Sure thing, I'll compile this information for you.

A note to add is that these same devices did work without any issues previously, probably about 1.5-2 months ago when I was messing around with the thermal camera last. So this is a recent problem!

Thank you for your help :)

Yes, my USB-C flash drive used to work flawlessly too until recently. Since our OTG devices are so different and it's happening with both of them it shouldn't have anything to do with the OTG devices. It's simply a bug in the phone's software.

That's great news Omnistache! Yes, please do send us a bug report in case the issue reappears and we'll send it to the Engineers right away! - Ella
