Moto z3 Camera. Video Lag / Pixelization.

2018-12-04, 6:05 AM

Hello,

Using stock Moto Camera 2 app on the Moto z3 i am noticing video lag while moving the phone around when recording (rear camera) when "Video stabilization" is enabled. Turning "Video stabilization" off solved this issue.

Also when recording in all video modes (rear camera), 720 / 1080@30fps / 1080@60fps / 4k@30fps i am noticing  a heavy amount of pixelization even in good lighting when moving the phone around.

So, i decided to check the bitrate for each video mode, they are as follows:

720@ 9mb/s

1080@ 17mb/s ( this is for both 1080p modes)

4k@ 50mb/s

So, i decided to install "open camera" 3rd party camera on google play that allows me to adjust bitrate. And i was able to improve video quality and reduce the pixelization by adjusting the bitrate higher for each video mode the moto z3 supports.

( i also believe open camera was utilizing the camera hardware better than the moto 2 camera app )

The level i adjusted the bitrates too with "open camera" are as follows:

720@ 20mb/s

1080@ 30mb/s ( this is for both 1080p modes)

4k@ 70mb/s

Then i installed snapchat out of curiosity,  and suprisingly when recording video in snapchat there was no lag at all and almost NO pixelization at all.

So, this tells me that the moto camera 2 app is not optimized for the moto z3 and is not utilizing the camera hardware to its full potential.

So i have 2 suggestions, Allow users to adjust bitrate in video mode inside the moto camera 2 app for each video mode. And please optimize the app to utilize the moto z3 camera hardware to its full potential.

I realy enjoy the phone and would like to be able to use the defualt camera app to take advantage of the features, but as it stands now i honestly get better video quality out of my old LGG2 when using the default camera app.

Side note, the front camera performs better than the rear camera in video mode on stock moto camera 2 app.

If any other moto z3 users are noticing the issues i mentioned please comment your experience.

I would also like to hear from motorola staff on the issue.

Edit: I have had this phone for 5 days, it has no visibale damage to the front or rear camera.

I hope the staff do take notice.

I like and use,"Open Camera".

Just a thought.Do you have your default save location set to an SD card?If so I only use,"Class 10 speed" Micro SD cards.Anything lower and when recording and even playback the videos can lag :/

The "storage" location is set to "phone"  And the lag with "video stabilization" On is noticable in the view finder while recording, and noticable in the video file itself during playback. i also transfered multiple recordings to my PC where the lag was also noticable.

I have read tons of google play reviews of the moto camera 2 app, which is included as the stock camera app on multiple moto phones, tons of people seem to be having the same issues as me.

Along with other issues i have noticed as well, constant focusing during video capturing which causes blurring.

Also if you look on youtube, you can find video samples that are done outside during the day (1080p & 4k) where the pixelization is entirely obvious.

so its not just my phone, or a hardware issue with just my phone.

I am hoping its just the stock moto camera 2 app being poory written and optimized for the hardware.  Because as i said, my 2013 LGG2 takes way better video..

The only way to upload videos to this forum is by a link, i do not feel comfortable putting videos of myself or the inside of my private home on the internet.

Here is a link to a review of the moto z3 video camera that shows the pizelization & video stabilization  issue i am talking about. scroll down to the bottom of the page and you can watch the videos on youtube or you can download the original videos at the very bottom of the page.

Here is another video showing the pixelization in 4k

I would also recomend you reading the moto camera 2 app reviews on google play, which is further proof.

Hi cl31,

Thanks for the links. I appreciate your observations, I was looking at the videos on the link. Personally, the video quality looks great to my preferences. As shown on the video, zooming it will normally pixelate the quality. I'll have this feedback forwarded to our Product Teams. I would also recommend trying the MotoMod Hasselblad for a greater quality, if you'd like. Thanks.

I never ZOOM in while recording a video.

Also the moto camera 2 app should light up the front screen during front video capture to improve the usablity of the font camera. Google's camera does this  well, however i would recomend using the bright white  vs the offwhite yellowish color googles camera uses.

photo included as an example.

Not to be rude.. but seriously just grab someone in the office over there whoat Motorola who has a Z3.

Open the stock camera app and go to rear camcorder mode.

Turn on stabilization.

See the problem.

No upload of anything needed.

Why not just fix the problem?

Help me to understand this: Other app developers are able to write better programs and utilize Moto hardware better than the company who makes them? When this problem is that blatent, it is still not fixed.

Please please please help me understand this.
