Re: Volume control button not adjusting ringer/notification volume.

2019-05-16, 19:19 PM

Please fix this issue with an update or something please. I literally  just bought the Moto z3! I've been bragging about it but I need the actual volume buttons to adjust the ringer/ringtone not the **removed** media or other sounds. Will be returning this device if theres not an update available soon.

Hi Loganic,

Thanks for posting. Is your Moto Z3 running Android 9 (Pie OS)? If so, media volume was set as default when you press the volume rockers in PIE OS version.

This is working as designed. You need to go to the Settings to adjust the other volumes.

your telling me the design factor changed. Because when I bought this phone, the volume button worked my telehone. I dont even have the option of picking which item I want it to control. I guess the work arouind is, using a headset and its control button, it will control what ever sound is coming through..Atleast something works the way it should!!

Yes, that's what he is saying.  When you bought the phone it had Android 8 Oreo.  With Android 9 Pie Google changed the default volume button option.  It is now Media volume by default and you have to open the Volume settings to change other volumes.  That's different than the way it was on Android 8 Oreo.  But this is a system level change implemented by Google with Android 9.

Wow, thats interesting. I noticed it on my phone a few times but never payed much attention to it until I saw the complaint on here. I always use a blue tooth headset so, no issues there. Thanks for the verification.

I'm having slightly different but similar problems after my Moto Z3 phone upgraded to Android 9. -- 1. I get sound with phone calls ONLY but cannot adjust the volume -- 2. Media volume control doesn't work with rocker switch or in the settings for regular OR safe mode -- 3. Media volume is muted for built-in speakers, headphones AND bluetooth devices -- 4. All volume controls are "greyed out" on the settings screen (please see attached)

Fixed...

Apparently, my phone went into DND (Do Not Disturb) mode without letting me know. :smileyfrustrated:  I thought I had already checked this to verify it was off, however, it was not obvious in the settings that I had DND mode on.  Everything is working as advertised now.

Hi,

I was very frustrated when Android 9 changed the volume buttons to control the media volume all the time so I developed an app to fix this and make the volume buttons control the ringtone and notification volume as it used to. It's free and you can install it from here: [https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.softstackdev.volumeFix ]

Let me know if you need any help to use it.
