Benefits of Verizon version over Unlocked version?

2019-06-27, 18:47 PM

Are there any disadvantages of the unlocked Z4 versus the Verizon specific model.

In prior Verizon only phones, the VZ version was tuned to the VZ networks.  Looking at the specs, the Unlocked version lists all the radio frequencies of the VZ version (and more).  Any downsides here?

I'm thinking mainly in terms of compatability/performance on the Verzon network.  I know the price will vary.  This is besides the obvious differnce of the Verizon version being locked and the Unlocked version of the Z4 being unlocked.

I plan to use the phone with VZ as my current carrier, but the unlocked version might have some benefits when travelling out of the country or switching carriers in US.

Thanks!

No, this isn't true.

Only the version SOLD BY Verizon will support the 5G Mod. The retail/unlocked version, even if on a Verizon account, will not support the 5G Mod.

We have tried to make that clear but it is confusing.

I believe the unlocked version does not support VoLTE or the 5G mod. If either of those are important to you, you may want to go with the Verizon version.

The Unlocked version does support VoLTE and the 5g mod. The benefit is if you get the unlocked version. It can run on any network & is stock Android. The Verizon version will have their junk on it, plus you will not be able to change carriers if you were to choose to do so.

Also, I don't believe the unlocked can do Wi-Fi calling on the Verizon network.

That is correct, no Wi-Fi calling...

Unlocked version gets software updates faster because it doesn't have to be approved by vzw.

Are you sure about the 5G mod? I was told that at release, the unlocked would not support the 5G mod and an update down the road would enable it (no timeframe was given).

My bad if incorrect!

If you have the Verizon version it should travel out of the country just fine. I use my Verizon Z2 Play in many other countries (with Verizon SIM) and it works fine. But it may or may not have less frequency compatibility in the USA and elsewhere, so that is something to compare.

Currently Verizon phones are sold SIM card unlocked, so if the frequencies do line up, it should work fine on other networks, but that is something to check.

Yes, I am sure. There's no 5G in many places yet though, but when there is, it will do it.
