Moto Z² Play Unlocked

2017-07-27, 15:55 PM

Looks like the Moto Z² Play is now open to pre-orders. This may be an obvious question, but can anyone tell me if getting this phone for Verizon through Motorola/Lenovo means no Verizon bloatware? Or does it simply mean that it is not locked to any particular GSM carrier?

Hi CaptainObvious,

The phone will only come with the stock Google and Moto apps.

Re: Moto Z² Play Unlocked

So i checked Moto's webpage for "Carrier Freindly" info on the Moto Z2 Play and found a discrepancy.

I attached the word file to highlight what it is saying.

on one hand it says it can be activated at US Cellular, and on the other, it can't.

Can someone tell me the actuall truth?

I'd like to get it for my mom Since the G5 plus wasn't able to be activated.

Thank you,

yeah, I see what you're saying there. I forwarded this on to the admins so we can get that page fixed. As far as the phone, it's an unlocked version so I would think it should work. The problem might be in getting US cellular to activate it.

I own the Moto X pure and purchased it about 1 month after it came out.  took it into US Cell and they activated it as a Google nexys becuase MOTO X pure wasn't an option.

Although the G5 plus is an unlocked phone, US cellular could not figure out how to activate it for my mother.

The top line MOTO Z2 force seems to be compatable with US Cellular but not the Z2play?

Thanks JM.

The Verizon version...can their apps be in installed or do I need to wait for the unlocked version for that?

And who controls system updates for the Verizon and unlocked versions?

updates for either, come from Motorola. on the verizon version, Verizon has to approve updates before they are released, but they still come from Motorola

From my understanding, if you buy it from the cellular provider, they control your updates and their internal apps.

In the past, every phone I purchase through the store will not gain software updates at the time of Google release but when Verizon or the other company deems it to be compatible for them.

The apps that come from those cell companies are usually not able to remove.  Though as technology gets better, maybe you can now?

I'm set to buying unlocked for life now.  I will not buy from the service provider as long as I can help it.

Any word on whether or not the unlocked version will be bootloader unlock capable?  I'm assuming it is considering a version of TWRP is already out for it!

So...the Verizon version of this phone supports WiFi calling. Is that implemented in Verizon software or is it possble that this feature would also be availble in the unlocked version of the phone on Verizon?
