no 5.1 for me yet.

2015-03-13, 23:03 PM

as of a half an hour ago, no update.

is anyone else in the same boat?

i decided to pull the simcard out and just keep it on WIFI for a while because i dread the idea of chaining my N6 to verizon because of the update.

so for now i'm using my trusty chromecast remote AKA DROID RAZR MAXX HD as my phone.

as a former T-MO guy i really like the idea of WIFI/LTE calling that google wireless is promising and have no problem waiting a while for it.

as a guy who has used MOTO devices exclusively since i retired my G-1 i must say the N6 is the best by far.

I sideloaded the update. So, I am on 5.1 now. Simultaneous voice and data now work perfect for me. I haven't really noticed any other differences other than the speed difference. It is much speedier since they have all 4 cores running all the time.

When I was installing apps it was installing them at least twice as fast as I remember them before. I will enjoy this update.

Have to admit I feel slighted by Google... I bought the Nexus 6 because I wanted to have the fastest updates. Maybe I'm wrong, but when someone can order a new one from Verizon and have it shipped with 5.1 installed, and those of us who purchased them last year have to wait, it pisses me off. What is the holdup? This is supposed to fix the texting issues on my network...

For me, 5.1 is a mess, and I miss 5.0.1.  Similar speed for me in 5.1, but half the battery life, and all kinds of problems with "Ok Google" (see my other post here).   Yes, I have simultaneous voice and data, and HD calling if I could find someone else who also has it that I can talk to.  Hardly worth it.  Be careful what you wish for.  Be happy with 5.0.1 until you are forced onto 5.1.  Life was good with 5.0.1.

5.1 is supposed to fix the texting issues for those of us on Sprint's network. If the update is good enough to launch on another network, then surely it is stable enough to be released to the masses... You would think that making the phone function properly for users (the duplicate text issue that is documented ad nauseum) would be a priority. My friends and family are sick of it.

For me (on Verizon), 5.1 breaks some things and fixes others.  I don't see a speed improvement at all (I have always run an unencrypted file system via modified kernel), and four cores vs two hasn't shown me any noticeable improvement.  For me, 5.1  broke more than it fixed, and it added features I really don't care about.  If it resolves your Sprint issue (as I hope it would) then you're far ahead with 5.1.  My experience with 5.1 is disappointing.

There are ways to update/upgrade before the OTA, but the Moto folks prefer we not discuss that here.  You will get the update soon enough, and I hope it fixes your duplicate text issue.  Neall

Not a whisper or a hint (Moto bought 64 GB on VZW) SIM on WiFi - it's way too early but I hope we haven't been orphaned.

I'd rather stay away from the alternative methods if at all possible.

Updates on Nexus devices come from Google. They are the ones that will be responsible for pushing the update. That is, unless it is a carrier variant. That would probably be pushed by the carrier.

I personally have Verizon and I wouldn't want the Verizon variant. All features work on my Nexus 6 on 5.1 that the Verizon branded Nexus 6 has.

The only thing that doesn't work is the Verizon network doesn't recognize my phone as a Nexus 6. It is unrecognized. No big deal to me. I don't have any of their bloat either. That makes it all worth while!

Re: no 5.1 for me yet.

For those unfamiliar with the way Google rolls out updates to the Nexus devices, I will try to explain briefly.

The initial release goes out to about 1% of active devices. This is mostly for debugging purposes to make sure that those 1% didn't get bricked. After about 3-7 days and there are little to no issues with the initial phase, another 25% will receive the update. Another 3-7 days will pass and another 50% will get the update. 3-10 days will go by and remaining devices will get the update. This is what they call a "phased rollout", and is to prevent 100% of active users bricking their phones at the same time, if they are able to catch a bug they can stop the rollout, initiate a fix and start again.

Also, keep in mind that if you are not one of those pre-selected for each phase, constantly checking for updates does not work. Once your phone checks in, you play the update lottery. If you win, you get the update. If you lose, you have to wait until the game is played again in 3+ days.

Hope this helps.

Which Nexus 6 do you have, and did you get the upgrade OTA or sideload?
