Booting linux from flash drive: Ideapad 330S-15ARR

2019-01-09, 5:25 AM

I got this laptop in a hurry - was on a deadline and the older think pad died on me. Didn't realize some units don't support linux. So guess I'm stuck. I tried a few bios changes and was able to get it read the flash drive, but then stalled giving error (see picture attached).

After reading the forums, perhaps there is no hope of installing linux easily. I don't have too much time to spare into compiling the kernel.

What do you all suggest? I got the laptop 2 months ago.  It's the AMD version (Ryzen 5).

Guess the windows portion works fine, I'm stuck, with it, right? I can't run anything liveOS either. I'd be contended if it can at least run a live-linux-OS... I'll appreciate your comments.

@SolarisSDK, Thanks for the reply, but I couldn't figure out a ton of things.

Can you link me to an easy-to-understand step by step guide?

e.g. some folks ask to add the following to do

 ivrs_ioapic[32]=00:14.0

and

spec_store_bypass_disable=prctl

But I am not sure where should I add those lines...

Alternately, If you have a simple guide somewhere, I'll appreciate your help. Thanks again.

Turns out, I figured out :-)
Just had to press the 'e' key at grub and enter these two commands. I put them in place of ' quiet splash '.
Hope that helps someone in my shoes, in future.
Now the next goal is to get wifi rolling.

Wifi is easy.

But if you still have to use ivrs boot options means that it still isn't fixed for your notebook's firmware. Sad to hear this.
