Can I Turn Off Windows Battery Saver Mode Under Linux...

2021-05-30, 13:30 PM

My T14 Gen 1 AMD battery was set to Battery Saver mode under Windows 10 Pro and will  not charge past 85%. Is there a way to reset this behavior in BIOS or via some other pathway that does not involve reinstalling Windows? I am currently running Fedora 34.

I'm not a Linux person so I can't really comment on how well TLP works. Perhaps someone more knowledgeable will chime in.

I appreciate you don't want to reinstall Windows, but one option would be to do it on an external storage device, boot from that and reset thresholds. At least that way there's no need to disturb the contents of your Linux drive.

That is actually why I was curious about turning it off. If I do not turn off whatever state the battery is in now (which is obviously independent of Windows being installed) will I be working cross purposes with TLP or does TLP utilize the same mechanisms involved with Windows Battery Saver settings? I am not sure after looking at the links you provided, but it does mention TLP cannot change what is hard coded into the EC. I assume either a) Windows changed it because it is not quite so "hard" coded, or b) it changed a setting in BIOS that is not accessible to (or well hidden from) users. In short, if I turned it on in Windows and it followed me into Linux despite removing Windows the setting has to be saved somewhere.

I think this may be the best bet for me. The TLP documentation is not altogether difficult, but it is quite in depth. I could spend several hours messing with that or a few minutes messing with Windows. Thanks.
