Does ThinkPad L15 works with Linux?

2020-08-04, 22:47 PM

Hello,

Can someone confirms that ThinkPad L15 (https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/coming-soon/ThinkPad-L15-AMD/p/22TPL15L5A1) works with Linux (all FN keys, suspend/wakeup ....)?

I see only ThinkPad L13 and ThinkPad L14 on www.lenovo.com/linux but no ThinkPad L15.

Re:Does ThinkPad L15 works with Linux?

Hello,

I have been using Fedora Linux on a Lenovo Laptop for several years now.  My installation just works, I installed Fedora Workstation distribution, and all the power functions, track pad, function keys, wifi, audio, video, and so forth worked perfectly, without a need to edit any configurations, load miscellaneous patches and such.

If you already have the L15, download and test the Fedora Workstation distribution.  The Fileserver distribution may not be as pleasing.   AFTER you are pleased with the Distribution performance by running the OS from the LIVE USB image,  then permanently install it.  If you don't have an L15 yet, perhaps the sales store will allow you to boot from the Live Image USB within their showroom?

Sincerely,

Usedtoberich

Hi @szefoski

Yes - Linux should work - it has been Ubuntu certified (https://certification.ubuntu.com/hardware/202006-27964) and let us know if you see any issues. I haven't personally tried Fedora on it (I don't have one) but if you try it please let us know your experience.

It should be part of the web release sales when those get turned on but we're still completing e-certification for that particular platform

Thx

Mark

Hi @Osmos

Bad news I'm afraid - and I'm somewhat frustrated by this too.

The L-series has the Goodix Match-On-Host device (USB ID 27c6:55b4) and this does not have Linux support available. The HW team have confirmed this will be resolved in future generations of the platform but it didn't happen for this years models.

Sorry :( I know from previous conversations that getting Linux support for the MoH devices is very unlikely.

Hi Lenovo,

We brought L15 in Sept 2020, is this model work for Linux OS?

Thanks,

Swati

Hi @9360

If your question is about fingerprint reader - sadly it seems the fingerprint reader on the L14 and L15 isn't currently supported - I'm looking to see what we can do to fix it.

For Linux generally - it is a certified Linux machine though we are still completing enablement (working through e-certification currently). So it should run well. Let me know what distro you're using and if you're seeing problems

Dear Mark,

Thank you for the response. Try to install ubuntu 20.04 LTS. Is this distro support all the features of the system?

Thanks,

Swathi

Hi @9360

Yes it does -  without the fingerprint reader currently I'm afraid.

The platform has been certified with Ubuntu (actually with 18.04 but all the fixes are in 20.04 so it should be good. As a note - I don't think the L15 comes with a WWAN option but if I'm wrong - WWAN is not supported.
