Extremely high idle power usage on X13 AMD

2021-07-06, 8:26 AM

Hello all,

I took my X13 (4750U/16GB) off the AC after quite some time and noticed that on latest Fedora kernel (5.12.13.300) the idle power usage is way too high.

The consumption you see in the image is with EVERYTHING turned off (BT, wired, wifi), backlight turned to 0% and nothing at all running in the background. As you can see, with everything on idle the battery is good for 2 hours or so, which makes my X13 a VERY expensive paperweight, given that I have 5-10yo Thinkpads that run at less than half (with massively bigger and/or double batteries).

TLP is on with sensible defaults, everything bar graphics is "good" in Powertop tunables and with tsc fix in grub usage is even higher since I get very high scheduling tick numbers.

Since powertop does not give any more details, any idea as to what might be causing this?

Hm, this could be related:

https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/amd/-/issues/1632

I see people in the bug report mentioning it with iGPUs (like ours is). I did not see the power usage attributed to amdgpu, but that might just have been powertop not reporting it correctly...

I take it that noone else is experiencing this, then. Anyone with Fedora on T14s/X13 that could screenshot their powertop on idle battery so that I can least see where to start looking?

I have much lower idle power consumption on my T14s AMD G1 with BT and WiFi on an comfortable screen brightness (~30%).

Current kernel: 5.12.14-300.fc34.x86_64

Many thanks for the info @Iluha. From what I see, you have similar wakeups/sec but are missing the backlight entry, which is indeed strange in my case as the wattage does not change significantly with different backlight levels. I believe I have USB-C monitor as first boot monitor in the BIOS (since it is effectively a desktop now...), I will change it back to thinkpad only and see if it some USB-C weirdness, of which it has many, triggers and creates problems.

If anyone else could share their stats, I'd be grateful.

Hm, this is looking like a kernel regression that got fixed..

I upgraded to 5.12.14 and rebooted, still high values. Stopped TLP, values became consistent with yours. Restarted TLP, still low values. Rebooted a few times and played with TLP, values are much more reasonable (3,5-6,5 depending on backlight and load), so it seems TLP triggered something on 5.12.13 that it didn't like. Still, if anyone (especially on Fedora) could post their values, it would help to verify my findings. I'll have a look at changelogs as well, to see if anything related changed between .13 and .14.

I' ve rebooted into 5.12.13 and powertop shows 11-13 watt in idle.

Rebooted into 5.12.14 and see the normal 4-5W in idle again.

So you are right about the fixed regression

Great, thanks for the info. It seems the link above is the culprit then, so I'll go ahead and mark this as solved.
