Fan error limited performance on boot

2021-07-01, 13:40 PM

Hi,

From time to time I get a message along these lines while booting:

Fan error

Booting with limited performance

After a couple of seconds or so the laptopt goes off. It's a T14 AMD Gen 1 with BIOS 1.30 (couldn't update successfully to 1.32 yet) and happens very randomly and not too often.

Does anybody else has seen it?

Seeing the amount of issues that are present on this platform I'm realizing I've made a bad purchase decision...

Well this thing is now more evident after updating BIOS version to 1.32. I see the message every other cold boot. It says "Press ESC to boot with limited performance".

I have the laptop charging on the USB-C port hooked to an external monitor.

Hi

I haven't seen any reports on this. As it's happening during the early boot can you contact customer support and see if they can help you with this - it sounds like a potential HW issue

Oks. There are phones on the website and also I can ask for a service request related to HW or warranty but no regular email.

Do you know if there are any emails to contact with customer support?

Afraid I don't call our customer support so I'm not the right person to ask.

Given the state of my inbox I'd hate to imagine what a customer support's email box would like with :) I'd try the phone or the virtual customer support thingy that pops up...

Just one more thing I've discovered about this issue...

As I've said, laptop is hooked to an external monitor through an USB-C port that also delivers power. That's the only cable connected to the laptop. Mouse and keyboard both are also connected to the monitor.

Now the suspicious behaviour:

  • Turn on monitor first or just right after the laptop => causes the issue more times
  • Turn on laptop first, wait until logo goes away or password prompt shows and then turn on monitor => I don't remember to have the issue

What do you think Mark? I'm considering on going the support route but I wanted to share this because it could be very well another problem in the BIOS.

Btw, if I have to send the laptop for replacing some part/s, will I lose my data on the drive?

Re:Fan error limited performance on boot

Although it might not be related, me and other have had several issues when power is delivered via USB-C. For example, on my X13 Gen1 (4750U), if I have power from AC and connect a USB-C monitor/dock or the Lenovo dock to the other USB-C port, everything works OK. If I only receive power from the monitor or the dock, both much higher rated output than the laptop, I get freezes every 10 secs or so, as if the CPU throttles. I suspect if you get the equivalent at boot, it might explain why you are getting this message.

Makes total sense what you comment. Right now the problem is sorted out if I power on the monitor after reaching the password prompt at boot. But as you say, this look like a real issue with USB-C power delivery that should get attention from Lenovo.
