Re:Finally X55 5G modem works under linux

2021-07-27, 22:14 PM

Hi there, I've been searching quite a lot about the linux support for x55 modem. I read recently that the 5.13 kernel supports the card so I figured I'd just wait until it came out.

Fast foward just a few days and I installed the 5.13 kernel and I have no changes on the working of my x55 modem.

I have a thinkpad x1 nano and mostly I am very impressed so far. Other than this modem not working I'm wondering if I am skipping some step, but this thread seems to be the closest thing to an answer I have found in days of searching.

I think my machine sees the card and I "think" the driver is loaded, but I don't get a device to link to in NetworkManager, but when I do "ip addr" command I see the mbi_mbim0 interface enumerated in the list.

Anyway, if any in this thread has any pointers or things I could try out I'd love to hear it.

Cheers

About my system:

x1 nano, fedora 34, kernel 5.13.4-200, tmobile sim, 5g modem (qualcomm x55 5g)

Already said, libqmi, libmbim, and ModemManager have not branched at this time.  You need download from "master" branch of each from github, and compile under your release.

Not just 5.13 alone.  If you don't know how to build, then just wait a few more months.

ahh! Thanks I seem to have not really understood that pearl.

I'll see if I can't get those built then!

For me the only thing required on the 21.10 daily install was to upgrade to 5.13 kernel.  Supplied network manager etc worked as is on my system.

Stability has been poor though recently.  I carry multiple devices which are capable so its not a big issue for me; though it would be nice to get this working properly as the laptop is more sensitive than my mobile devices and thus is able to get signal in areas where the mobile devices cannot.

I also see the MTU related error messages etc.  I tried to use it earlier but it would not stay connected and since I needed to work I ended up using another device.  I will try to use it more in less demanding circumstances to gather more information over the coming weeks.

Re:Finally X55 5G modem works under linux

Anecdotally I just swapped to the 4g modem here and did some browsing for a good few minutes without any dramas.  However as seems to be typical for me with this modem as soon as I get reasonably high throughput the connection just dies.

Above errors seem to correlate with when I ran a speed test on fast.com.  Connection died immediately after the test although it looked as if it was still connected in network manager.  It feels like it breaks more often when its on 5g as well, definitely there is something not quite right yet.

It's the same for me.
Also, after the connection dies I can't get it to work again.

I tried with Ubuntu 21.10 and kernel 5.13 too. I was able to see the modem, but it didn't work. The mmcli tool stated that the SIM-card was missing, which is was not.

I checked multiple times and thought maybe the SIM-slot was broken or something, but it didn't work.

To see if it was a software or hardware problem I installed Windows 10, installed all updates and drivers and it works like a charm. Speedtest by Okla said 241mbps download and 56mbps upload on 5G.

I don't want to use Windows, but it was nice to see, that it is not a hardware issue.

You need install libqmi and libmbim from master branch. Not just 5.13 kernel.

Thank you very much! I got it working on Ubuntu 21.10 now. As you said and properly said many times; compiling libqmi and libmbim from master branch did all the diference. Their documentation is very good. https://modemmanager.org/docs/libmbim/ https://modemmanager.org/docs/libqmi/ 230mbps download and 70 mbps upload. Thank you!
