Grub rescue

2014-05-23, 7:16 AM

I deleted the linux 12.04 partition on my hard drive . The windows 8.1 partition is still there but after deleting the linux partition i restarted the pc and comes a black screen with error->

error: unknown filesystem.
Grub rescue>

i know that this problem is resolved by repairing window startup but i can't do that because i can't see my boot selection option or f2 and f12 option. So the bootable disc is not loading .i have linux and windows bootable disc also.
Plz help to solve this problem.

Hi,

If you have the Linux cd, you can boot with it and then from a shell you use dd to wipe off the MBR like so:

dd if=/dev/null of=/dev/xxx bs=446 count=1.

Replace /dev/xxx with your device name such as /dev/sda. Confirm the name using fdisk -l command.

If you have a Windows rescue disk, boot with the rescue disk, go to Command Prompt and then type in bootrec /fixmbr

Thanks,

Sanjay

It means you're not booting from the CD. Check your boot order in BIOS.

Finally got the solution after tring very hard. Its little with different and dangerous but worked 1000% for those whos bios bricked or whos did not enter into the bios and want to get back the bios enter key like f1/f2/f10/f12 etc.
Thankx for the support and for your valuable replys.

After a lot of troubleshooting, and reading various forums, fixed it myself.

I had to reinstall the bootloader GRUB, it's not very easy for linux beginners.

It's the most straight forward way I was able to find online.
