Help, Gnome crashing on fresh install

2021-02-04, 22:27 PM

I need help troubleshooting constant Gnome crashes on a fresh install. Im kinda hoping for some quick and dirty tips/tricks.

Fedora 33 Workstation (tried Silverblue first, and got same error before swapping to Workstation)
Thinkpad P50 with discrete Nvidia Quadro M2000M
Using with external display.

I have tried both Wayland and Xorg, but I see similar issues.

Just a few minutes into logging into the desktop, the are constant shudders/lag with mouse and keyboard input. A few minutes later, there the whole desktop will lockup: sometimes mouse is still usable, but the application windows/shell are locked up. I will usually see a flickering triangle in the top left of external monitor.

I can switch to a TTY, but I haven’t been successful restarting GDM. I typically have to reboot laptop.

In journalctl, I see:
> Feb 04 13:14:19 usphable-lin kernel: i915 0000:00:02.0: [drm] Resetting rcs0 for preemption time out
> Feb 04 13:14:19 usphable-lin kernel: i915 0000:00:02.0: [drm] gnome-shell[1783] context reset due to GPU hang
> Feb 04 13:14:19 usphable-lin kernel: i915 0000:00:02.0: [drm] GPU HANG: ecode 9:1:85dffffb, in gnome-shell [1783]
> Feb 04 13:14:19 usphable-lin kernel: GPU hangs can indicate a bug anywhere in the entire gfx stack, including userspace.
> Feb 04 13:14:19 usphable-lin kernel: Please file a _new_ bug report at https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/intel/issues/new.
> Feb 04 13:14:19 usphable-lin kernel: Please see https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/intel/-/wikis/How-to-file-i915-bugs for details.
> Feb 04 13:14:19 usphable-lin kernel: drm/i915 developers can then reassign to the right component if it's not a kernel issue.
> Feb 04 13:14:19 usphable-lin kernel: The GPU crash dump is required to analyze GPU hangs, so please always attach it.
> Feb 04 13:14:19 usphable-lin kernel: GPU crash dump saved to /sys/class/drm/card0/error

Sorry, I just realized I skipped the question regarding if the gpu was driving the displays.

Yes, part of the issue is that intel graphics are driving the displays. Which got me thinking.

I just found a setting in the lenovo Bios. I changed from Switchable Graphics to Discrete only. So far, I am seeing a lot of improvement, but will need to test further to determine if the issue is resolved or not.

Hello,

Does it work well when using the normal display and the onboard gpu?

Does the onboard gpu drive your external display?

Can you preset the nvidia graphic to a non-aggressive set of graphics parameters, small resolution, small refresh speed?

Diagnose which graphic driver is installed.  (dnf list *nvidia*)

This should help lead to an answer.

It looks like this is a common issue on this P50. Reported on Fedora, as well as Manjaro. Likely kernel level regression.

@Mark_Lenovo have you seen this?

Issue occurs on:

- wayland/nouveou - ussually after 3 to 5 min

- xorg/nouveau - even quicker than wayland

- xorg/nvidia drivers - equally as quick as nouveau. installed these via rpmfusion repo.

right now, i had uninstalled nvidia since it made performance worse, but if you think it is helpful, i will reinstall them.

Hi @barn_io

Just acking the note - thanks for flagging it.

I don't have a good answer - it looks from a recent posting on one of the tickets that you switched to using discrete mode and that helped - let me know how that goes (either with wayland/nouveau or with proprietary Nvidia/xorg).

I'll have to see if I can track down that combo of hardware and likely get help from the graphics experts. If you believe it's related to a kernel update and are able to provide any clues of when it was working and broke that would be helpful.

Thanks

Mark

I implemented the Discrete Only via Bios, and it is working much better now. I have not seen any hangs whatsoever. After doing that, I tried wayland/nouveau, and it worked fine. However, when driving my external 4k monitor, it responsive, but graphics would sometimes studder. So I tried xorg/nvidia, and all is working very well now. Its a shame the Hybrid graphics are not working, as that might give me better battery life, but that said, it is performing very well.
