AMD T14 w/ Gen2 USB Type-C Dock to power 4k 60hz & 1440p 144hz on Arch Linux

2020-12-01, 10:25 AM

Hey so I have the Thinkpad Gen2 USB Type-C Dock and trying to hook up two 27" monitors.

One is a LG 4K UHD 27UD88-W at 60hz and the other is LG 27GL83A-B 27 Inch Ultragear QHD at 144hz.

I have a Displayport 1.4 cable going to the 4k LG and HDMI 2.0 cable going to the 1440p LG.

When I boot into Windows10 everything works flawlessly, 144hz on 1440p monitor and 60hz on 4k.

For some reason the dock is giving me issues in Arch Linux tho (i3wm). Using arandr to enable the monitors works but it will not let me have both monitors on at the same time as well as never letting me have 4k resolution on the 4k monitor (highest it let's me do on 4k monitor is 1440p res).

This is the message that arandr and xrandr send me after trying to turn on both monitors or set the proper 4k resolution on the 4k monitor:

XrandR failed:

XRandR returned error code 1: b'xrandr: Configure crtc 1 failed\n'

I have tried sending xrandr manual commands as well but all xrandr sends back to me is "xrandr: Configre crtc 1 failed"

Have you updated the dock firmware to the latest version? Lenovo enabled DP DSC in a firmware update a while ago, and it could be that you need DSC to get both displays running at the same time without chroma subsampling. It's best to update the dock from windows, since fwupd can't update MST hubs through AMD graphics yet.

Also, which kernel version are you running? AMD enabled DSC in version 5.6.

So I've actually tried to use my T14 AMD w/ the same dock with a 165Hz 1440p monitor and I had a very similar issue. Anything over 1440p60 or 1080p120 fails to turn on, like there's not enough bandwidth. On windows it works just fine though, without any chroma subsampling. If I had to guess it's a problem with the amdgpu driver, as there are some quite similar issues reported on their gitlab, and I also tested with another MST hub and had the same problem there.
